Steve,
I'm sure there are other opinions out there. I standardized off of what my Zebralight (headlamp) uses. 18650 Batteries. These are found on eBay and are also used in a group in laptop computers. They're a little bigger than an AA, or, can be used in the place of 2 CR123As in series. They can be paired with very inexpensive holders with both a micro USB and regular USB plugs which mean they can be recharged or used to charge other things. (the search on eBay is for "18650 phone charger", and they come in a lot of different layouts, all inexpensive, but, I prefer using 1 battery at a time as opposed to a whole bank in parallel in case I need my light to have full juice. One alone will charge my phone pretty quickly, but, regardless, to keep the playing field level, look at the MAH rating of batteries you buy as the unit of measure) 1 18650 carries anywhere from 3500MAH to 5000MAH and weighs about 45g.
They're cheap too. Candlepower forums has lengthy discussion of various chargers, batteries by folks smarter than me.
