    Default New pup Kobuk

The pitter patter of little feet around the house once again...
This is our new Samoyed pup - Kobuk
here at 14 weeks - pretending he is ready for a pack trip...

a couple weeks later and he has almost doubled in size and gets to wear his pack empty - and loves it...

A happy companion on the trail.

Cute pup. Nothing better than a companion on the trail.

Looking at these and other pictures is torture though (wife is really allergic)!

Tough with the allergies that would be a deal breaker here too.
This our 3rd Samoyed and it has been several years since we thought we were done with it - its a heart breaker when they pass.
But having the pup is once again a joy and a challenge.

A short video of him out in the yard - hunting and eating bees in the flowers.

    Nice pup!

What size is the MountainSmith pack? I just ordered a medium for my Aussie, but haven't got it yet.

    Thank you.

The pack is the dog pack 1, which is the smallest. It is great for him now. He wont get any weight until he is over a year old. But he thinks he is cool when he wears it, so we are off to a good start.
Sierra Trader had them on a deal - that came with a food bowl, water bowl and bed roll for under 30.00 bucks. I was going to pick up a couple roughwear bowls and that cost more then all of this.

I just received his big pack the other day - a Wolf Pack native. I like the simplicity of it. Around here there is so much foliage to snag on and the Wolf Pack doesn't have all the straps and mesh that could hook on things.

Kobuk will be a different size, but his color reminds me of meeting a Pyreneese on Mt Yale. Was coming off the peak, turned a corner and there was a friendly Pyreneese and a Bernese Mountain Dog. Around another corner was their master, a 70 year old gentleman in a stetson, a side holster and a revolver. Still makes me smile. 70 and still hiking in the mountains with his dog, pistol and his stetson. Doesn't get any better!

Kobuk has stolen the hearts of every female in this house. AAwwwww! was the typical response.

That's cool. He does that around here too... among a few other responses (he can be a little stubborn & surly sometimes - resembling his owner already I guess )

I can't believe how fast he is growing.... This was from yesterday at the park that is next to our home.

    Short answer....
He will be about 24" at the shoulders and weight 60 - 70 pounds.

    Long one about him....
I searched for a breeder that produces athletic built Samies - I found 2 in the US that specialized in what I was wanting. I was waiting for a particular litter, but I was the last on the list. Unfortunately, I got bumped off when one of the pups died from swallowing a chew toy.

I figured when its meant to happen it will..... and a month later this pup (from the same litter) who was destined for Norway became available. The buyer broke her leg I was offered the chance at the pick of the litter. I had to sign a contract for showing him which I didn't want to do but I made a deal with the breeder to handle that for me. The sires are big time national and international show champions and they really don't let you have a pup unless your willing to do that.

It is interesting to me that this breed, being one of the oldest at (3,000 years) and was used for pulling sleds, hunting polar bears, hearding reindeer and keeping their owners warm in their tipis (which resemble our tipi camps). Living and following the reindeer heards above the Arctic Circle in Russia has to be harsh.....

They were chosen by Amundsen to be the first sled dog team to reach the South Pole.

Kobuk will easily carry 15 pounds when he is full grown ( that's my 8 man and stove plus) while being an excellent companion along the way.
