One of my wholesalers has got the last batch of 338-06 SBGM's and ULW's on sale right now for $879.99 wholesale. Bill Hick's had a dozen of each as of yesterday. I bought one of the SBGM's today so if anybody wants one you better hurry. I got one for my bud 2 years ago and he loves it. He's taken it with us to Alaska the last two trips. I tried to get one soon after I got his and everybody was sold out. So I grabbed one this time. Jimmy's shoots my loads (210 Nosler's over 4064 and RL15) into 3/4" groups, I hope mine will too.

Rugerman,
You're killing me!!! I passed on the 338-06 last year because I wasn't reloading yet. So I got the 30-06 SBGM. Now I'm reloading. Go figure. Too bad I don't have the extra $$$ laying around, or one of Bill Hick's 338-06s would be mine. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. /images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Sawtooth, just have it made into a switchbarrel, with matching 30-06 and 338-06 barrels.

kevin,
I don't know much about doing the switch. It never made any sense to do so because I couldn't reload. Now things are different (read, better). More info???

I am told it's not too hard to do. You could have 25-06, 30-06 and 338-06 or 35 Whelen for essentially the cost of the new barrels.
Same idea as Patrick's ramblers...
A match grade barrel is better than $500, so it's not cheaper than getting a new gun. (Cheaper than a SBGM, though.) But if you're really used to this rifle, swapping the barrel makes some sense.

Sawtooth,
I got the 338-06 last year. Wish I would have gotten the '06. Why switch barrels to a similar caliber? I can't kill anything with 210 noslers that you can't kill with 180 or 200 gr. noslers. You can buy ammo anywhere, I can't. One company makes 338-06 ammo. $40 for twenty if they can be found in the store. Anyhow that's my .02 worth.

Sawtooth, he makes a good point.
If I were to make your Weatherby into a switch-barrel, my first barrel would be in 25-06 for the lower 48, then 338-06 or 35 Whelen, if I were going outside the lower 48. A good 30-06 in good hands is still potent medicine for any soft skinned game.

You guys are very correct, and I agree 100% about the capabilities of the 30-06. That's the reason it was my "non-reloading" choice in the SBGM. And you make a point well taken regarding other options for the switch barrel scenario.

At the risk of sounding totally ignorant what is a SBGM and ULW? Don't worry about the ignorant part everybody already knows I am. I handled the 454 alaskan at the elk convention I really liked it.
