Early Saturday morning, my 14 year old son, Jack, shot a cow elk at 200 yards with his 308 Savage rifle. We were part of a group of youth hunters after elk with depredation permits on Rattlesnake Mountain in WA state.

The landowner gets permits from WDFW, lets the wildlife guys give some away in a drawing, gives some to family, and gives a few to local hunting organizations to invite kids to come on the ranch to help thin the herd.

I'm one proud papa. One shot with a handloaded 150 grain partition gold in the boiler room, and the old girl died on the spot.

I am rich beyond my dreams,,,,and I still have another son with a permit!

Congratulations to both you and your son!

14 - My age when I took my first big game animal. After all these years taking that deer while hunting with my dad is still one of my most cherished memories.

Your son Jack is a lucky young man.

Thank you for passing on the torch!
