text message? My Dad and I contact each other on a pair of Motorola walkies. They are nice but there is an unfortunate situation with dad. After 42 years of working with sheet metal, he is almost legally deaf. He can misinterpret what is said on the walkie or outright not hear it.

I was thinking to myself," I wonder if there is some sort of walkie that can text message. That would be great. I could type in short messages like 'ALL OK' or "SAW THREE DEER" etc.

Anyone know of such a thing?

I have not seen any walkie talkies, but there are pagers that include a keyboard. Motorola makes one that you can text message back and forth....If you get the right service, it's good pretty much statewide in Colorado.

Or, in some areas, you could text message with the cell phone, but I draw the line before cell phones.

I was thinking of something outside of a cell phone. My dad and technology don't go too well.:-)

You can send text messages with the new Garmin Rhinos(sp?) will do this so long as you are within radio contact range of one another. You can also see where he is in relation to you (up to five people I believe) should he slip/fall/become unconscious and unresponsive. From what I understand they've boosted the range on the latest models.
