Would anyone be interested in a rendezvous somewhere in oregon around spring break time? CO is so far away for a bunch of us and I know there are several members here from the PNW area.

I'm in. I am off Th. through Sun. and can go just about anyplace. Will be gone some in March and April 1 but other than that would love to get together. When is spring break?

I would definitely be interested! Depending on Time/Date and Place, of course. Got a few buddies who would be interested, too.

Pretty much the last week of March this year. Im working through my bachelors so I still think in terms of spring break' timeframe.

I'm in northeast Oregon which offers a lot in the way of terrain or activities at that time (spring turkey maybe or sheds hitting the ground) and would be more doable for any Idaho or eastern Washington folks too.
Lots of public land to use and we could have fire wood pre staged.

OK so the 24-26 it is then!

Mojo, you and your buddies in for then? Snakey? Ransom? xrangerx? I know this will be a small deal at first, but maybe we can build it up over a few years.

I'm going to see them this week and I'll figure out if they're up for this.

I'm enthusiastic, but a quick google maps search says the Wallowa National forest is about a 6.5 - 7.5 hour drive from Tacoma, so I've got to temper that enthusiasm with the reality of distance. Also, the wife and I share a car, and she has class on Friday and works the weekend, so I'm at the mercy of my buddies and their willingness to drive.

But, like i said, enthusiastic. I'll let you know :)

Mojo, if you still have my personal contact info drop me a line, you can hitch a ride out with me if necessary.

Somewhere in the blue mountains. I say somewhere because the snow this year has been a bit extreme and now there is a good bit melting. I'm planning on driving around up there next weekend to start feeling out some places.

I apologize if this is all over the place, I'm on kid duty right now.

Ok, I went for a ski tour yesterday poking around. I'm thinking the Mt Emily sno-park, roughly 25 minutes from Pendleton, could fit the bill. IIRC it costs $5 to park there (I'll confirm this), but there is enough room for several of us to get some rigs in there.

There was about 12"-24" of snow in most places but it's melting pretty good right now.
Obviously it's a bit out to predict how much will be left in a month.

Does anyone want to weigh in on how far in we should look at making camp? I found two places that could support several tipis. The first was roughly a mile in and had a small spring nearby. The second was maybe another mile more and appeared dry. I was pressed for time at that point so I didn't get to look around there like I wanted. I've got opportunity to get back up there soon and do a proper assessment, I'll update you guys then.

Any other considerations anyone has? There are more picturesque places in NE Oregon for sure, but I wanted an area that was as short a drive as possible for you west side folks.

Let me know fellers.

I am good with what you pick. I will probably come in on Thurs. or early Fri. cause I have a drop off in Pendleton on Thurs. and depending on time will stay there or go in that day. If it farther away than this place it will be Fri. when I get there.

I skied back 3 miles a week and a half ago and there was plenty of snow and no evidence anyone had been off the trail at all. There are areas in the timber that are open and could support more folks then would likely show up. My next post will contain a map screenshot of how I've gotten back in there.

For now plan on parking at the Mt. Emily summit sno-park. I'm not crazy about having to have a permit to park somewhere on public land, but I don't know of anywhere else in the Blues at this point that can support several rigs with the amount of snow we've gotten this year. If I'm wrong, let me know, anywhere up there is good honestly and we can walk anywhere.
So, with that said, expect to get a pass IN TOWN before you head up the mountain. Regardless which way you're coming, both Pendleton and La Grande have places that provide the pass. Its cheap. Last time I was there a FS leo pulled up and started checking passes. I was able to talk my way out of a ticket though. So it is enforced. I guess ideally it provides an area to leave our rigs where folks wouldn't want to chance breaking your window with the fuzz being regulars.
Here is the info on passes:
https://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/pages/vehicle/sno_park_permits.aspx

I'm passing through that way on Sunday and will stop in for a look to see whats snow conditions are currently. Ive got kids in school so I won't get up there till friday afternoon and will stay through sunday late morning.
I've got an 8 man tipi some folks could crash in if you don't have shelter sorted. Another fella coming should have something similar as well, I'll confirm.
Expect BYOB and food. I'll bring along some extra elk steaks though.
Its public land obviously, but since most folks coming up there will be new to each other and several people will likely be armed in some way, some consideration of weapon status while drinking needs to be made. Any ideas?

Ive never set anything up like this before and I'm not used to planning for others, so anything we haven't addressed or whatever, get it out there.

This is where I'm thinking.
Trailhead is UTM,

This is walk-in and carry your gear, food etc. correct? Just want to be prepared. How about dry wood for fires/cooking?

jhayes6405
03-11-2017, 05:30 PM
Yeah that is correct. When I skied in I spied several
standing/leaning dead trees. I'd consider pulling a chainsaw in with me if I had one but it's all hand saw for me.

I have a chainsaw I could bring. When you say pull do mean in a sled on skies? Is there enough snow to ski or is what snow there is hard enough to walk on?

Yes I plan on using a pulk. I'm driving by there today and will have a better idea of conditions. I'll update tonight.

So I stopped in last night at the trailhead. The snow is disappearing pretty fast on the way up. At the top snow is still fairly deep however, and would for sure support pulks. If it stays as warm as it has been, I'll need to get up there again a day or so before we all show up so I can get you guys a final update. But, it may be getting thin enough by then to require snow-shoes but not support skis. Like I said I'll get back with you guys again on this.

I was really looking forward to doing this. I was going to drop my daughter off in Pendelton and then move on. This weekend it just won't happen. I haven't been this sick in years. A summer gathering would be great. I might also be in that area in later April to move my daughter from here to there.

Well final exams have me slammed so I couldn't get out to check what the snow is like right now. I personally am going to leave the skis at home and bring snowshoes. The warm temps down low and what I can tell from the road cameras on the interstate up high have me thinking it may be melting up there too. Looking forward to any and all that want to attend.
