View Full Version : 2014 Kifaru Spring Rendezvous

Patrick
04-03-2014, 03:26 PM
The Kifaru Spring Rendezvous will occur May 15 through May 18 (Thursday--Sunday) in historic South Park Colorado.

As usual I will be on-site Wednesday setting up tipis and so forth...and anyone who wants to come early is welcome to join me.

This is the original Rendezvous for Kifaruites--the Grandaddy so to speak. The theme is fellowship--for old-timers and newcomers. Bring your hiking boots, fishing gear, firearms and bows. The scenery is spectacular. The venue is car camping; most years standard vehicles can make their way to the site BUT 4WD is strongly recommended, and some years the only way to get in there and out. It can and does snow during the proceedings. Bring a variety of garments including winter versions. Bring you own shelter, sleeping bag, food and etc.: basically you will need to be self-contained. We traditionally do pot-luck suppers, but it's not obligatory for you to participate. There will be a lot of wild game dishes and gourmet edibles of all sorts on hand. Bring your favorites and show them off if you like.

There will be shooting ranges, self policed. Newcomers please follow the lead of the Regulars on the ranges. Adult beverages are traditional in camp but NOT on the ranges. Enjoy them after shooting.

All attendees please Register with angie@kifaru.net. This will allow us to bring the correct number of Rendezvous Hats, which all Rendezvouers receive each year. We will send you via return email further instructions on what to bring and directions on getting there. It is our secret site. Give Angie your address and phone number. Also, how many folks will be in your party.

That's all I can think of for now. If I've missed anything a host of veteran Rendezvouers will fill you in. I am looking forward to seeing you old-timers and you new-timers!

Good times ahead, I may be coming solo or with Kimber for a night or two, she's excited to shoot some more and of course to see her Uncle Don! Wife and youngest May be up for a bit as well. Might be bringing a 12 man for superior comfort and style!

We were able to work out a trip back to Colorado from Washington to pick up the last truck load of our belongings. Nautilus and I are happy to say that we'll be able to make it to this!! Bummed we missed the winter rondy. We're traveling light, so no yurt this year.

Look forward to seeing you all there!

Hey Scott,

Yeah, Steph and I are living in N. Tacoma. She applied and was accepted into the Masters of Science in Nursing program at the Pacific Lutheran University. We packed up and moved from Steamboat in December. We got hitched where I was born and raised back on the west side of Maui in January. And now we're in the Pac NW.

Steph and I met in college at the Univ. of Puget Sound in Tacoma, so we're 'returning,' so to speak. We've been here a little over a month, now.

It's going to make attending the rondys a little tougher, but if I can make one each year, I'd be happy.

You gonna try to come out to the spring rondy?

You gonna try to come out to the spring rondy?

No, Mojo, I can't make the spring Rondy. RandallH and I are planning an elk hunt this fall, and I'm going to be using all my extra vacation on that trip and hopefully a scouting trip in late summer. Good luck to the both of you in Tacoma! If y'all ever get down to my neck of the woods, be sure to look me up!

Regards,
Scott

Hey everyone looking for some more information on Rondys. I'm new to Rondys and to Kifaru in general. Is it possible to come to these things on say just a Saturday and not the whole time and still get something out of it? I'm moving back to Denver from the east coast that week and I don't think I can make it up for more than a day or two.

Much appreciated,
Antonio

Still a ways out to tell on Weather. But no matter. We roll with everything up at Rondy. Tipi's Stoves So even if we get a snow storm up there youll stay warm. Patrick will have his 24 man and other Tipis up there with the stoves. So you should be fine. Winds can be an issue up there so if your not sporting a Kifaru Shelter and a cheap tent it is possible it could get shredded. There are some woods areas up there but they are usually taken early on. Last year we got their saturday and stayed kind of out in the open. That was an adventure =-) I use my Truck to block the blunt of the winds up there.

Should be fun time. Im bringing the Bows and a few Targets to shoot at. Cant wait.

I'm not worried about the weather or winds, I'm wondering about the road. The last quarter mile could be a problem it the snow pack is still with us.

shtfco,
I'm bringing a bow and a 3 year old who wants to learn to shoot as well. Figure Kevin M will be up for some stump shooting as we usually do that you are welcome to come along for some adventure. It will never quite be the same without Bill Krenz guiding us through shooting form and hitting exactly what we were pointing at some unknown distance away.
Good times await, I plan on coming up Friday and hope to avoid some weather before we have to hunker down.
Anybody know if a megatarp will fit inside a 12 man, my 3 year old might be stoked to have her own Patrick special!

If you get the chance, offer up a prayer and a toast to Henry...he will be there in spirit.

Thanks

Jon S
05-13-2014, 08:22 PM
I would like to suggest we salute young Henry the same way we did Bill Krenz in 2011. A full line of admirers, bows drawn, rifles in hand and a series of great thoughts offered up to Henry on his journey (I bet he's learning to shoot a recurve from Bill) and to Bill for taking care of the lad as he would have if they were both still here.
A second salute to Dan, Lisa, Isaac, Garrett and Sherry for their loss would be appropriate and very appreciated.
I say we do it at high noon unless someone else has a better idea, bring something that would make them proud. I am sure someone will have a video camera we can record and send to the families.

I talked to the Jefferson Market today, they're the store on the corner where we turn off of hwy 285.
They said there was no snow on the ground in Jefferson, but there was more snow as you got higher. They have been around for some time and have had ups and downs over the years. I would like to suggest we support them in some manner as we travel through. They sell 3.2 beer and wine coolers if anyone is planning on bringing up some daytime beer, get it there, it'll be cold and we probably won't need ice up top.

Patrick

I won't be making it up this year, which is too bad because I was looking forward to it. Dan, you and the boys will be missed I'm sure.

You guys will have to pardon me but I couldn't help commenting on the post quoted below. shtfco, your must not have attended the last rondy at the old site, further on up the hill there. That was probably 4 years ago? Anyway, epic winds one night. It's ironic that you mentioned the 24-man because as I recall, it was the biggest (literally) casualty, due to nothing other than its sheer size and location on top of the hill. Anyway, ask flamingo the story, I'm pretty sure he was there.

Hey smoke you'll be missed my friend. Last year was my first year. But I heard about that story and the winds. Glad they now have a place more in the wooded area. I had a great time last year at the rondy. Beautiful views great people and lots of fun.
I made mention of the winds because last year when the wife and I were there we where getting some strong gusts out by where we camped more towards the road in a cheap tent. We had fun chasing our gear down cause stuff was getting blown away.

Smokepole
05-15-2014, 08:47 AM
Well, hopefully the only things that will get blown away this year will be the steel targets and Sawtooth (figuratively for Sawtooth).

Keep an eye on your cooler around that guy. His favorite beer is "other peoples."

Looks like a fine time.
Those comments about wind and the 24-man...brings back memories!
Bushcraft, Patrick, Flamingo7 and I think, Big Jon and I were sitting in the thing when it cut loose. We all bailed out, got it flattened and on the ground pretty quick.
Patrick immediatley grabbed his note pad and began the autopsy. Shortly there after he grabbed a pair of sheers and modified a stove pipe for a smaller tipi. One of the youngsters used Big Jon's shoulders for a ladder and threaded the new pipe through the port in the new home base and we were back in business!

I may have to see if I can work the 2015 gathering in my schedule again...what a grand bunch of folks!

OK...what is that awesome belt-fed machine John is shooting? And was it rolling full-auto?

Randy and James, not sure who that svelt fella is using the belt fed tool, but it's not me. I didn't spend as much time on the range this year as I have in the past due to having the Wonderful Kimber around for her first rendezvous. Good times were had, great folks were there, Kimber and I made some new friends and shared some good times with old ones as well. One of my favorite quotes from Kimber was Saturday evening after enjoying a s'more. She was hungry for dinner and said, "Daddy, I want to go home." Hoping against all hope that she didn't really mean it, I asked what she meant. She replied, "back to our tipi!" She's found a home with great folks and warm nights sleep, thanks.
Big Thanks to Patrick and all those that make these gatherings possible and such an event. From the late night conversation on life and religion to the goofing off around the site, a good time was had by all.

I was fortunate enough to attend my first rondy, unfortunately was sick the entire time. However, I still had a great time and want to thank Patrick, Flamingo7, 30mike06, SHTFCO and all the Kifaru clan members who made me more than welcome. I had an excellent time shooting guns and bows, conversing (even though I could barely speak) and just hanging out. Drinking good Irish whiskey and eating good food on top of all that.

Good Lord willing, I'll see you all next year:-)

A tip of the hat to all who attended the rondy. Think about it: that many people and not one problem. How often can you say that?

Actually, I know...once a year around the middle of May, in South Park. Some of the best people in the world frequent this MB. It shows every year.

Hey Zane it was good to meet you bro. Glad you made it sick and all. Kevin I agree. Its hard to say that about anything you do with a bunch of hunters. Always one in the bunch has to be a headstrong. Glad we are all humble enough to kick back and enjoy each others Company. Really had a great time Saturday night. Kevin wish you could of stayed up we had a blast after the crowd went home. I think we polished off the rest of the bottles Lol. Was to much fun. And getting to hang with Patrick Smith was pretty Epic. Lots of fun.
