I watched Nova last night and was just enthralled. Secrets of the Viking Sword follows the recreation of a Circa 800AD Viking Sword from smelting through final polish. The blacksmithing work is worth the watch, what a craftsman.

Cool show, I watched it as well. One thing I didn't understand though. They implied that the Vikings got crucible steel by trade with the near east, but seemed to imply that one needs to work the steel into the right shape as soon as the ingot comes out of the furnace. I guess either they don't know yet or more likely I missed something. I also wonder how many attempts that craftsman made before He got the sword they portrayed on the show.

The Nova show called Secrets of the Samurai Sword is equally watchable. Worth looking up on YT.
