Was wondereing if anybody has good experience with dying ACU gear? Preferrably black, but would like to know about other colors. How does it effect the waterproof of the material? Reasoning is, a bunch of companies, including Kifaru, are getting rid of their ACU line. Plus, I have a surplus of ACU gear. Could be a cheap way to get some gear at a good price. In general, dye is pretty cheap, but never tried doing it.

I dyed my old acu pointman dark navy

i used a method that was posted on some other forum, i dont remember

it involved me getting lots of RIT dye in powder form, boiling a ton of water, enough to submerge the pack

in the water i would add salt and vinegar (i dont remember how much), and dissolved the dye in it. Put the pack in , weighed it down with some dumbells and let it sit for a day.

the pack came out nice, the belt dyed REALLY well, some parts you could see some acu bleed through , i washed the pack in the machine twice , once with cold water and once with hot to help bleed out any dye that hadnt adhered.

wore it all summer, never got dye on my shirt.

I cant comment on the waterproofind change... i never got rained on :)

i sold the pack, and the new owner removed my dye job using some sort of dye remover

simko,
Other than those few spots where the pattern came through, is it noticable, at all, that the pack was dyed? Is it a faded black like it was left out in the sun for awhile? If possible, pics would help out with this...

Thanks,
Mike

i could have re-dyed the pack, but it worked well enough for me

Was that long pocket dyed? Either way, it all looks good. The admin pouch looks pretty solid. Did you remove the Kifaru tag on the Pointman to keep it from turninig?

Read this link:http://zombiehunters.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=98784

if your question is:

I want to buy kifaru stuff at a discount because ACU is on for 25% off, but dont want to stand out because my gear is camo, can i dye it another colour?
the answer is: yes

remember that ACU stuff was marked up because it was a specialty colour, so really, you arent getting 25% off of the stock prices, you are getting 25% off of the marked up prices....something to consider

Getting 25% off of anything is better than nothing. The specialty colors aren't marked up that high. Plus Maxpedition is doing a buy one get one free deal. At any rate, I still have a bunch of usable ACU gear that could be used more if it weren't camo'ed.

It will be interesting to see what can be done with UCP if the US4CES pattern is the selectee of the "Final 4" candidates.
