View Full Version : Thinking about a Euro-Rondy

10-12-2011, 12:27 AM
Title pretty much says it all. I've been thinking about setting-up a European Rondy for next summer. I've chatted with quite a few people here on the Continent who are very interested in being able to see/handle Kifaru gear. I just happen to live in the midst of the largest American population outside of America. Plus, we are centrally located in Europe and co-located with many NATO troops, who would surely be interested too.

How would one go about setting-up a Rondy? Do they need the "blessing" of Patrick Smith to happen? Is there a chance that Patrick or Mel could make it to a Eruo-Rondy? How 'bout getting some Kifaru swag to give away as "door prizes"?

Any info/help will be greatly appreciated. Also, let me know if you would be interested in attending a Euro-Rondy.

Take care,

I would be interested to meet some guys from this board here and to handle some Kifaru gear if possible too.

I guess the biggest challenge will be to find a place for a rondy. In entire Central Europe I do not know a place where you just can go into the woods and camp. Usually it is illegal. Sweden, Norway and Finland have different laws but it is quite a journey to Sweden.

Ja, it would probably have to be at a camping park. Unless someone has land that they wouldn't mind sharing for the Rondy . . .

I will ask some people that might be interested or willing to join/help us that have access to suitable areas.

great idea ! What country/area you have in mind ? I think that there are only three countries in the EU with liberal gun laws where there should be no problem doing some shooting. (Finland, Switzerland and the Czech Republic) I have some friends in Finland and CR.... plenty of places to set up camp.

Gentlemen, this is beginning to sound interesting.

I have been thinking about the weapon issue too. IT IS a major stumbling block. Before I moved here, I sold all my weapons due to the PITA reg's and procedures I had to go through to maintain them. I've got a contact who might have a place in CH, we'll have to wait and see what happens.

What would people think about a "weaponless" Rondy due to the circumstances? Would it still be fun to get together for a couple of days to drink beer and handle Kifaru products?

Patrick - any advise you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

I am in eastern Kazakhstan now and if my vacation time is the same time as an EU Rondy I would bring my tipi along. When my contract is over here I plan to travel overland to the UK anyway (to march the West Highland Way in Scotland) so it would be nice to meet some people in-between. Shooting would be fun but I doubt its absence would wholly ruin a time in the woods somewhere. I'll keep watch for any updates!

Shooting is not really necessary in my opinion. Meeting a bunch of European users of my gear in a pleasant outdoor setting would be grand in itself.

Forget about shooting, fishing or hunting out in the forests in almost any place in Central Europe. I guess the best idea is to find a nice area where there is a place for camping and doing some hiking etc. If a nice shooting range is nearby, its even better but I doubt that we are that lucky.

Kifaru would be happy to send Tee Shirts, Hats, and other goodies! I might need to send myself over as well! Sounds fun!

Just my opinion, but I feel like shooting mostly takes away from rondys rather than adds to them. If having a firing line adds the least bit of logistical complexity I would, in the words of snoop dogg, drop it like its hot.

So where do you want to meet and when ? Guns are not an issue but I do want a BIG JUICY YANK MADE BURGER !!!!

Wow! It's great to see a lot of interest in a Euro-Rondy!

It seems that a weaponless is OK with everyone so far.

As far as a location, I've been thinking that it should take place near me in Kaiserslautern, DE. This part of Germany is very central to all of Europe, we are at the cross-roads of several Autobahns. Kaiserslautern is also about one hour away from several international airports; Frankfurt-Main, Frankfurt-Hahn and Saarbrucken. Ryanair flies to both Hahn and Saarbrucken and Frankfurt Main has all the international airlines. There are many camp grounds around here too, many with lakes. There is also an extensive mountain biking trail system here in the Rheinland-Pfalz. Lastly, there is a great brew-pub in downtown Kaiserslautern!

Let me know what you think. If I can get a handful of people to commit, I'll start looking into places, dates, times, etc.

Keep me posted! Germany sounds nice and central.

Great idea,

"All my bags are packed, Im ready to go"

Let me know if something to help or do.

Great idea! I'm in, provided I'm in-country.

This is starting to get good.

If you're interested in attending, keep letting me know. Start spreading the word to others you know that might be interested in attending. Let's try and get as many people as we can.

In the Black Forest there are quite alot of permanent Boy Scout, Youth groups camps that usually consist of a building with kitchen etc. and a smaller campground. Usually those camps are not in the villages. This year some friends and I had a party an entire weekend in such a location. I will ask my friend who organized the event about phone numbers etc. The Black Forest is about a 1-3 h drive south/south east of the Rhein-Main-K-Town-Area.

What do you think about that?

10-21-2011, 03:09 AM

That is an excellent idea! I didn't even think about those camps. My wife and I were the camp medics at a Boy Scout camp this past summer at a camp near Ansbach.

Please check into your idea.

For the record: if you men put this together I will find my way there.

Gebuesch1, I do hope you will bring Infidel girl!

Any idea of a tentative month or date?

10-24-2011, 12:00 AM
If we want to do it in Germany some of the long weekends in May or June might be nice

I agree. Earlier would be better to avoid the late summer holidays. I'm thinking right around the first half of June would be great.

For the record: if you men put this together I will find my way there.

It would be a honor to have you attend!

For your consideration, wife Sarah and i are thinking of booking a Danube river cruise between Prague and Budapest. Option dates are either June 4 to June 15 or June 8 to June 19, depending on which city we depart from.

These cruise dates look happily to be around the time you fellows are talking about. Perhaps the Rendezvous could occur before or after one of our cruises? We could scoot over to wherever you guys are. I'm certainly not lobbying for accomodating myself; just know that I will not be able to attend at all if I'm cruising on the lovely Danube when it occurs.

In any event, it looks like the Kifaru European Rendezvous may be forming up for real! Congratulations.

...a Danube river cruise between Prague and Budapest.

How does that work?

10-24-2011, 03:30 PM
Bus between Prague and Nuremburg.

10-24-2011, 03:39 PM
Interested. Date wise avoiding those holidays would certainly make it easier to get a venue. I for one am likely to be working at a camp them myself, taking students climbing etc.

I might just have to buy a Pointman to celebrate the possibility of a Euro Rondy!
