Anyone necked up the 308 to 338 or had experience with this caliber?

I had one made up last spring. Rem S/A, 21" in an MPI. Finished weight is 5.75 lb w/a Leo VXII 2X7. I like it a lot. Tell me know what you want to know.

Do you have any ballistic information?
At least muzzle velocities for 200 through 250 grain bullets?
Have you taken any game with it?

I was injured last year and could not go afield but did quite a bit of load development. Following velocities do not appear to be maximum loads.

180 Nos Btip 2770
200 Hornady 2685
225 Hornady 2500

Bought some 250's but never shot them.

Thanks for the information.
Why did you go with on a 21" barrel?

The velocity that JF is getting with the 338-08 sounds awesome to me. My experience with the 338-06 makes me think that the Remington 700 Titanium barreled for 338-08 would be an awesome rifle. 6 lbs w/scope sounds easy. I believe I would have the 308 barrel rebored to 338, lap lugs, adjust trigger to 3 lbs. I would probably stick with the lite bullets because of recoil.

Check out the article by Ken Waters in Handloader No. 177 dated Oct. 1995, entitled "A Wildcat of Merit, .338-08" It has a good deal of info on this cartridge.

Ken used a 24" barrel to get about the same velocities you have been quoted. He may be a little more conservative in his loading practices.

Patrick had a rambler for sale. Two barrels, 25/06 and 280 Remington I bought it and had him make up a 338/06 barrel as well. It has 22" barrels and I will mount a 2.5x8 Leupold. Should total approximately 5.5 lbs. You responded to an old post.
Thanks for the information. Maybe the next rifle.
