Colorado Winter Rendezvous!

When: Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6, 2011 (advance party arrives on March 4th)

Meet at the usual parking spot at 10:00 AM

Where: A PM will be sent to all interested parties with driving directions to the parking spot, as well as both UTM and lat/lon for the rendezvous campsite.

This rendezvous involves a short (~3/4 mile) ski or snowshoe trip into our campsite, which is located in a clearing surrounded by stands of dead lodgepole pines. Its located right next to a good ski/snowshoe trail (a forest service road in the summer) which leads to designated wilderness a little over a mile away. The snowpack in this area averages around 30-40 (currently there is 27 of snow on the ground). Daily highs average in the high 20s and lows can hit well below zero. Abundant stovewood, wildlife, lots of ski and snowshoe trails, open water in the creek at times, all make for a good spot to gather with friends for a weekend of winter camping. Bring your plinking guns, as we've hung gongs in the trees in years past. Well have one of the larger Kifaru tipis and arctic stove on hand for our gathering space and some sleeping area. Meals are potluck style with everyone bringing their own food. Lots of sharing of food makes it interesting!

We hope to see you there!

No need to send me directions, I plan on being there and bringing some plinkers! Need to get up there and do some stovewood cutting, but not sure when that will happen. Been looking forward to this post for a couple of weeks, need to get the skis out and rolling again.
I sure hope we can get some new folks as well, those NW boys know how to lure a crowd. The sun that shines on us up there is amazing, all Kifaruites should be there to absorb some!

Scoutin', I know a guy headed there that could shorten your drive considerably. Get it worked out! Would love to have a multi-state Rondy in the cold.

I just got an email from Chas, and he WILL be coming again this year. I guess the -18F temps at night didn't scare him away! :) We'll probably carpool like last time.

What about you, Huntsman22??? Are you coming?

Chris57?

I'll be there, unless we still have birds left...

Want me to come over and get rid of 'em?

I may show up this year, sounds like fun.

Chas

Yes, as Sawtooth said, I intend to come--with a better sleeping bag. Save me a pulke. I really did have a good time last year.

Patrick and I will go cut some firewood a week or two before. Now if I can talk him into going ice fishing for lake trout.

Sawtooth

singleshot,

Patrick is kind of getting the ice fishing bug. You might just succeed in getting him on the ice!

Jon S
01-11-2011, 06:56 PM
Let me know when you go in for stove wood cutting, would love a short day trip and some glorious sunshine, will have to balance all the new fun with baby for sure, heck, maybe I could get her to use my GB axe, it is rather small and sharp, but she is sitting up almost independently.
Chas, be good to see you again, I can bring an extra sleeping bag as a quilt for you if you need.

I plan on going again this year if I am able. Jon may need to haul me in on his sled!

People are still talking about those backstraps cooked in Bacon grease on a Kifaru stove. I will try to duplicate that this year. Hopefully I still have some left, the elk gods weren't very nice to me this year.

Sawtooth
01-12-2011, 12:39 PM
I will have some on hand. Might be olive oil, but it'll work.

gonehuntn
01-12-2011, 01:00 PM
So...I think there is a law about using anything other than bacon grease while cooking elk meat on a Kifaru stove. If not, there needs to be one. I'm just say'n.

When the mountain streams are frozen and the Nor'land winds are out;
when the winter winds are drifting the bitter sleet and snow;
when winter rains are making out-of-door life unendurable;
when season, weather and law combine to make it "close time" for beast, bird and man,
it is well that a few congenial spirits should, at some trysting place, gather round the glowing stove and exchange yarns, opinions and experiences....
Nessmuck

I won't be able this time, but I'll be thinking of you guys. Just one range over working thru the night and wishin I was sippin Whiskey round that cherry red stove.

Hope ya'll have a great time!

P.S. I might could help cut stove wood if I'm availible. Let me know.

I guess I'll have to make some breakfast burritos then. :)

Jon S
01-14-2011, 07:24 PM
Or Cleve could arrange a meet up with me prior to the rondy, I would be the slave and pack them in, then be rewarded with some good eatin'! Heck, we could have a chili-cook off with two well known good cooks and we would all be the beneficiaries!
I say both bring guys bring them :)

I may be able to attend my 1st Kifaru pow-wow!

Right now the schedule looks open. Can you PM me some general location info so I can estimate travel time/cost?

Thanks,

Sawtooth I am interested in going. I need directions. I am interested in purchasing a Sawtooth or a Six Man Tipi. I would like to see one setup before I make the jump. Will these be at the Rendezvous?

GREAT! A PM will be sent in a few weeks with directions.

I'll make sure I bring my Sawtooth. Perhaps Patrick or someone else can bring the 6-man. That's the beauty of using a pulk... :)

Jon S
01-18-2011, 08:30 PM
I can bring my 6 man and large stove, won't be bringing the wimmen folks, so may not need the stove, hoping to reserve a spot in the big top :)

Zane Rakes

Is this an open event? If yes, I would love to attend. I am new to the Denver area, have a 12 man tipi and have only had the opportunity to use it 3x in 3 years.

Thanks

So, bring 11 friends and some beers. Might as well fill 'er up.

Sawtooth
01-26-2011, 09:36 PM
All are welcome!

Jon S
01-26-2011, 10:13 PM
Yes, Zane, it is an open event, good times, good folks and some pretty country. We might even get a midnight arrival from someone as we have the last two years. The room for tipis is pretty tight, the last two years, I have brought my 8 man and we have had the 24 man up as well. I imagine the 24 and 12 would work fine too, but doubt we will need that much space.
Welcome aboard
RandallH, let me know if you want to borrow a 6 man for an outing to see how it does for you. I like it for backpacking and not as luxurious trips as the 8 man, but it is pretty darn comfy!

Jon,

I may take you up on that offer. Patrick set my wife, youngest son and I up in an 8 man a few years back. Very nice indeed. I need to take another look. I have a Standard Longhunter on order, should be done next week.

Good times will be had, I called Mgutman today and he might make it up as well. Feel free to encourage him to join the Kifaru crowd in person rather than just on the internet.

Huntsman22

Since I am unable to partake of the festivities, mark could borry my purple snowshoes. Then, you guys could have a new whipping boy to tease....

Huntsman22
03-03-2011, 07:35 PM
Is my offer considered 'encouragement'?

mgutman
03-04-2011, 07:56 AM
Thanks Huntsman. I have my own shoes - and not purple. That's just crazy talk. :) I don't need any help with getting teased. Since I just decided to join late last night me and my kit will be in total disarray. I'm sure there'll be plenty to make fun of. See you all Saturday morning.

THIS THREAD NEEDS PICTURES!

Jon S
03-07-2011, 05:35 PM
There's pictures above, I regretfully didn't even take my camera out, but know that some good ones were taken. We rang some gongs, stayed warm, temps Friday night were below -10, had a few more folks show up Saturday and had some more imbibing that made the sleds lighter for the downhill out.
Those in attendance include:
Friday: Patrick, Sawtooth, Chas, Jeff (Mountain Matters on Facebook), and myself.
Saturday we were joined by Mgutman and then RandallH.
Good guys all the way around, good conversation both nights around the fire and only one person fell asleep outside their sleeping bag and another one got inebriated enough that the slurrings pre sleep were amusing to us all.
We rang some steel with pistols and a .44 mag lever action and did some forest cleanup of some hanging poles.
I am sure Sawtooth will post some pics, I saw some on Facebook already and hope Jeff/Mountain matters gets over here as well.
I believe Patrick might have found a new beverage, 23.5 oz, 12.5% and tastes like watermelon, I will let him tell the story if he chooses.
We missed those not in attendance. We raised a glass or two to Bill Krenz and told stories of his ramblings and expertise, his gentlemanly way of going about life and his endless desire to teach and write. He will be missed each and every time the Kifaru gang gets together.

Looks like a good time...

What loads were you fellas putting through that fo fo?...I really gotta have a little carbine like that to pair up with the silver snake.

I'd say a Gransfors Small Splitter and your saw would make a perfect winter pulk camping combo, wouldn't you 'tooth?

Sawtooth
03-08-2011, 06:53 AM
Yeah, Ken...don't rub it in! A small splitter is on my list. Randall and compay split up everthing with an old hatchet and a hammer. They did a fine job, too.

Can "just broke" due to it freezing and hitting frozen ground. Instead of letting it go to waste the "improvisation" was to doctor the can with some serious Swiss army surgery so none of the innards were unduly spilled. Very clean job if you ask me.
