I have a lot of exprience with traditional black powder shooting and am considering doing some kit building. I spent from the late 1980s to early 2000's doing authentic Civil War reenacting and have shot everything from .31 & .36 cal to .58 cal rifle and .69 cal smoothbores & making traditional cratidges for each weapon. Also traditional field cleaning methods. Marching many miles and sleeping with nothing more than wool blanket. Many of cold nights but memorable times and picked up a lot of survival techniques. My kids have taken up much of my free time so I don't do it anymore and the aches of aging are a lot harder to get over than when I was younger.
Anyway I was considering on getting back into at least back powder shooting/hunting. If I am going to do it I want to do hitorical/traditional backpowder. I definately want to try building my own starting with kits. I figured the easiest first project will be the Lyman Plains Rifle in .54 or .50 (Jim Bridger/Kit Carson type plains rifle). I haven't decided if I was going get a flinter or percussion though. I have read a lot of good reviews on this.
Does anyone have any experience in building and or hunting with traditional black poweder weapons? If so what is the best kits? I have been looking at Track of the Wolf for kits. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/index.aspx?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1&as=1 I think my best bet would be starting with the Lyman Plains kit.
Has anyone used these for small game as well? Like Rabbit or using a fowler for bird? I was thinking of a Tenn. Mountain Rifle in small caliber for small game. Any comments on using flint for hunting?
Anyway where I live the hunting tags draws are limited for modern rifle and my draw results have been pretty poor. I thought black Powder might open up my chances of getting drawn and perhaps bring in my old interests of black powder weapons and hunting.
I'd be interested in hearing any of your experience with building these weapons or hunting with them.
Also if anyone has one ther're considering on parting with I would be interested as well.
