View Full Version : Colorado Backcountry Rondy

06-29-2010, 04:58 PM
This idea has been tossed around more than one campfire discussion I've attended, and I think it's high time we did it! What I propose is a bona fide backpack rondy somewhere in the central Colorado Rockies/Front Range. Maybe two or three days. A moderate backpack in with good fishing and day hikes possible from camp. I have some ideas on locations, but what I'd really like to know is...

1. Dates??? I'm looking hard at July 30-31-1 August (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
2. Weekdays vs. weekends??? Weekdays will give us less traffic on the trail. Weekends will possibly allow more Kifaruites to attend. What about a three-day weekend (see #1).
3. How many of you are interested?

Let's get this ball rolling! Post your input!

I am definitely interested. Keep me posted. My schedule is quite flexible. Perk of working for your dad during the summers.

I think it's a great idea and I'd like the opportunity to meet folks from this board. I am unavailable until after August 7th so if the date pushes into August I'm there. Otherwise I'll read about it here. :D

Sounds like a good time, will have to work that Friday, but can hike in later that evening and stay through Sunday. Would be good to get above treeline and see some wild animals (other than Sawtooth of course)

06-30-2010, 03:39 PM
Interested but depends on dates and times as always. Don't know the calendar that far out at this point.

07-06-2010, 01:23 PM
The dates are definite:

July 30 through August 1st (Friday through Sunday)

When I return from a soon-to-be road trip next Wednesday I'll PM all interested parties with both driving directions to the trailhead and hiking directions to the rendezvous site. The trailhead is located one the edge of a wilderness area within an hour and a half drive from Denver. Both Patrick and I will head up on Thursday to secure suitable tent locations at the rondy site.

There are lots of things to do from camp...climb a fourteener or two, fish the stream for hungry brookies, hike to a high lake for wily cutthroats, catch a glimpse of bighorn sheep and goats on nearby slopes, as well as elk, mule deer, and the occasional black bear. Moose have even been seen in nearby drainages. Or hang in camp and enjoy the simple peace and beauty of the place.

Hope to see you there!

Can we get an official headcount?

Sawtooth --
Send me the directions. Not sure about that weekend (weekdays are always easier for me to get off, working in retail and all) but I'll see what I can do. Have a river trip planned later in the month and need to save some vacation time for hunting season. Have to see... but I'm definitely interested.

Like Cleve I'm not sure but maybe. Please send directions.

Count me in Sawtooth. Please send directions.

Are goats allowed and can an eight year old make the trek? Interested and would come early.

Herb, where can we meet up so your goats can carry my stuff? I am sure that wilderness areas allow tame animals, my dogs are welcome in most places with the exception of National Parks, although they won't be joining me on this trip, hence the need for your goats :)

My lovely wife is sound asleep, but surely expects my venture. Her first words about my NM elk adventure without goats, "I'm sure you'll find another reason to take some goats out west." If I can bring my son, could be a done deal. If it's not the best hike for a youngster, I understand that too.

Sounds good, send me the directions.

I already have plans that weekend. (Shooting class.)

Look forward to hearing about it though...

Not sure myself but would love to make it Sawtooth. Send me directions.

07-07-2010, 07:32 PM
This was partly my idea, Sawtooth and I discussed this while we were up there a few weeks ago, but unfortunately I won't be able to go this time. Duty calls; I'll be in hot and muggy Montgomery, AL attending Squadron Officer School. About as far away from the Colorado outback as anyone can get. However, before I leave in a few weeks I'm taking my son up there to catch some of those Brookies. I promise to leave a few for you guys! Their mouths might still be sore but I'll leave them none the less.

Do you have room for one more?

Dang, I'll have to miss this one. I have plans set for hiking Longs Peak on the 7th, so I don't think I will have time to be in CO 2 weekends in a row. I need to save some kitchen passes for the fall. ;)

Have fun and post lots of pictures!

07-09-2010, 06:24 AM
I'll be somewhere north and at a higher elevation looking for wooly white goats. Should be a great weekend and one that I hate to miss.

07-09-2010, 07:08 AM
Talk2much...yes, plenty of room!

07-09-2010, 07:31 AM

07-11-2010, 10:49 AM

My email address is douglas.beckman@yahoo.com for coords. I saw you on 'you tube' running with the Kiola attached with pouches for your water bottles. Are those pouches available online? Thanks.

Those water bottle holsters were made by Evan Hill in Bend, OR. They're perfect for use with the Omni belt that my Koala is mounted to. Simple, rock solid mounting, and the color matches. A really great addition to the Koala belt. I recommend you contact Evan for details. See you at the rondy!

Sawtooth --
Thanks for the PM. Unfortunately I'll have to move my name from the "maybe" list to the "bummer, I've got to work" list.
Y'all have fun.

07-17-2010, 07:21 AM
It's out for me too, y'all have fun.

I just started getting all my gear together and am getting excited for this weekend. Anybody looking to car pool? I am in the west Metro area. Figure the ride will go a little quicker with company.

Sent a PM to CoHunter303 saying I would like to be leaving shortly after 4 on Friday from Golden/Lakewood area.
Anyone else want to carpool around that time, shoot me a PM and we can set it up.
I have to be in a training until 4 (as far as I know now, it might end early on the last day, but I doubt it based on content) at I-70 and Denver West.

Would like to drive down with folks as well, let's all be environmentally friendly and split gas on the way to enjoy some wilderness areas.

07-26-2010, 11:26 PM
Another maybe to the life/work happens and I can't make it but would love to hear about it list.

07-27-2010, 05:32 PM
My maybe is a "no" now...
My company is letting more folks go so now have a job interview scheduled. I hope you all have a great time. I am happy to try and drive up to Golden and drop off some single malt with Patrick if you all want..just let me know...
