View Full Version : Son's First Hunt Report

Sorry but no epic story of triumph, success and an Odyssean pack out of several hundred pounds of meat. On the other hand, my son did pretty well considering we packed in up a pretty good incline for an hour to set up camp. It was the heaviest pack he's ever carried although nowhere near the farthest he's gone. Thanks again Cleve for that old Mountainsmith! It worked out really well for him. If I could just figure out how to mount a Gun Bearer, it would be perfect although he did pretty well keeping his relatively heavy rifle slung on his shoulder or cradled in his arms.

We had a sort of rough start when Chase announced that he didn't have his blaze orange vest or stocking cap. Since those are legal requirements for hunting, dad was just a bit peeved. The good news was that I had packed a huge long sleeved, blaze t-shirt to attach to his pack as well as a blaze ball cap in case the weather was warm (it was). I took off the fleece panel from my Guide and attached it to his pack and the crisis was averted. He then told me that I forgot his new gloves. You can imagine how that went over as I had made sure that all his gear was together. He just had to pack it. So dad had to give up his outer layer of gloves morning and night when it was chilly. That night when we got back to camp, Chase discovered that he actually had all that gear packed in his clothes stuff sack. It wasn't that he didn't have it, it was that he didn't look. I'm told that most twelve year olds are total airheads so I try to take it in stride. We did laugh pretty hard when he found it all.

for hunting as I did at his age and younger. Opening morning we found exactly one set of fresh tracks (conveniently a cow and a calf based on hoof disparity) and followed them for a long time/ways. We actually went well past where I wanted either of to shoot an elk even with Westy’s, Jon S's and Kevin's packing help -- they all very generously offered their help depending on availability. We finally caught up to them bedded on a very steep hill with lots of dips and folds along with timber. I was cow calling all the way, mainly because crusty snow and a twelve year old do not make for stealthy going. She started barking at me and we had some talk back and forth for about 15 minutes edging closer to her. I sent Chase over a rise where I was positive he was going to see her and she was still hidden! We hung tight because she wasn’t moving but I didn’t want to bust her out of there as moving shots through timber are not on Chase’s agenda. Finally the silence became too much to take and we moved up. We found where she had gotten out of her bed and moved up behind some trees on the other side of a little rise. Not 25 yards from where we had been, but never visible. She took off with the other elk very quietly and just walked away. We gave her some time to settle down and then went after her. I’ve caught up to elk herds before multiple times after bumping them and since she didn’t haul out of there, I thought we’d have a chance of catching her on the next bed. Unfortunately after some more following, it became evident she was going somewhere I wasn’t prepared to kill an elk. Chase wanted to press on but I explained to him that there are places you just don’t kill elk – or at least where we don’t.

We went back to camp for a break and then got in an uneventful evening hunt. Well almost uneventful. As I was cresting a small rise, I saw a porcupine moving at high speed -- for a porcupine -- away from me. As Chase had only seen them as deformed roadkill, I thought it would be cool for him to see one. I started running after it calling him to follow me. I lost sight of it for just a minute and it was gone! I looked high and low, literally, for it and could not find it. Now porcupines are simply not fast enough for him to have outrun us and I couldn't see it in a tree, nor had I heard him climb one which I surely would have. I looked under bushes and everywhere else. I can only assume it was a rare underground dwelling porcupine and had found a hole somewhere. Of course it could just be a reminder of my incredible hunting skills that I couldn't catch up to a porcupine sighted at twenty yards.

The were only a couple of gear casualties including my new to me POE insulated air pad. Just as an FYI, they are not made to sustain the briefest contact with a hot stove. Junk I tell you, junk. Chase scored big time with dad when he volunteered his REI inflatable for my use. He didn't have any problems sleeping on my deflated pad and the Gossamer Gear Thinlight pad I use to cover it for insulation. Oh to be young again. He dropped a water bottle that came with a fanny pack he bought from Songdog a while ago -- he has used the bottle but not the pack yet so as of right now, it was a $40 bottle. ;) He also dropped a $2 premium round out of his cheapo butt cuff which will soon be replaced. I assured Westy that we weren't caching gear and asked him to keep an eye out for the lost objects when he next goes up there.

Sunday morning we were only out a short while when he started complaining of not feeling good. He didn’t look well and I didn’t want him coming down with the flu up there so we cut it short and packed out. He seems fine now so I’m sort of kicking myself but I just didn’t want to take a chance with all the stuff that has been going around. I’m not sure if he’ll go back out this weekend. I’m planning a one day hunt, no backpacking. He is considering doing something with friends and frankly as little as these kids seem to actually get together (relationships consist of school and texting), I’d almost prefer he does that. But, youth tags have a WONDERFUL clause. If he doesn’t fill it, it is good in the late season (Dec. 1 – Dec. 31) in ANY area -- at least that's what I glean from the regs. I can again work on figuring out a new spot to take him for a long weekend, perhaps one that doesn't involve backpacking and has a bit higher chance of success.

Gear that worked well: Love that Kifaru stove. It's the first time I was able to take my own and although we had pretty balmy weather, it got down below freezing the first night and the toasty camp was pretty nice. The Shangri-La 6 was very roomy for the two of us and I think three would fit just great with the stove and gear. As usual, my Montana was a joy to carry. Whether in Gun Bearer or hand, it was hardly noticeable. Freezer bag cooking was great. Use a wipe on the spoons and clean up was done.

On the other hand, Chase's cheap poly pro type shirt did NOT work well. After just two days of wear, it smelled so bad I couldn't get within three feet of him. I was incredibly relieved that he had regular clothes to change into for the trip back. I guess we'll have to suck it up and look for a merino shirt despite the way he's growing.

Continued, and the most important part:

<o>A BIG thanks to those who helped with this hunt: Sawtooth and Singleshot who provided intel, Cleve for making me such a great deal on a great pack, Jon S and Kevin who offered to help pack if we were successful, Ed T who helped me out big time with a stove, Ali from Kifaru who helped me with a bag for said second hand stove, and anyone who bought gear from me over the past few months so I could get Chase properly equipped so that he'd be comfortable. Songdog also made an incredible offer of a hunt out by him that we can't do at present but I sure look forward to doing in the future. If I missed anyone, I apologize. There were so many, it's hard to keep track.
</o>
<o>The one guy I can't thank enough is Westy. He not only pointed us towards his honey hole, but went scouting and camping with us. Chase really perks up if Westy is involved. I think the prospect of hanging out with a "cool" (Chase's judgment is still a bit off), younger guy really appeals to him. Westy also spent a lot of time pouring over Topo with me, marking trail junctions, possible camps and where to hunt -- although we did provide what I think were good dinners. Knowing Chase's ambivalence about hunting, he tried to provide some incentive for Chase to thinking about the stuff he liked by giving him a Surefire G2L flashlight (better than mine!) in exchange for Chase writing up the hunt and what he enjoyed about it -- he's finishing that up today. Finally, he was always on call to come up and help pack day or night. That is about a three hour commitment each way between driving and hiking in and who knows how much time packing. I am deeply in his debt and can't tell you what a great guy and class act he is.</o>

<o></o><o>Based on the above two paragraphs, you can see the type of people that are part of this group. Generous and helpful beyond words. You all have my appreciation and respect for making this trip successful, not in harvesting game, but in a great father-son experience that I will always remember.

Smoke, it was more successful than most of my hunts. :D We'll see what Chase gets down and then add it to this thread. He's supposed to finish it up this morning so it'll probably be ready by next week. ;)

Oh, and I should add that the reason we'd look elsewhere for the late hunt is that I'm not sure that a 10,000 foot elk hunt is going to be viable in December.

Of course it could just be a reminder of my incredible hunting skills that I couldn't catch up to a porcupine sighted at twenty yards.

Thanks for a great story.

As for that Gunbearer on a MountainSmith...get a Universal model. Place it as far back on the hipbelt as possible, right up next to the pack body. Place the shoulder strap keeper about collarbone high. I have mine adjusted to the shortest length possible and it seems to work just fine for my bolt guns and my somewhat shorter in-line muzzleloader.

A smiley doesn't cut it. Cannot wait to get out with my son Thursday through Sunday for his second hunt, and those pics don't help.

Nicely done sirs, good on you for taking him out.
Tell him I am young enough (34) to be considered a young guy and tall enough to look up to until he grows taller.
Glad you found some tracks, too bad they are so darn sneaky.
The offer still stands, get one down, give a call and the posse will come quick, with empty packs and hungry bellies.
This weekend is deer for me, so be careful how much help you need, but know that I love pulling a sled in snow full of elk parts.

Looks like you had a good time, I had to kind of chuckle about the melted pad though since I just deployed your spare this weekend. It is a blast taking the kids hunting. I just got back in the house from sitting in a stand with son #1. We don't have a lot of time in the evenings since they are in school, but it helps to be able to walk 200yds from the house and be in some good hunting. We saw five tonight and had a big fat doe at 20 yds, he came to full draw as she went behind a tree, only thing that saved her was she turned away as she came out from behind it instead of going straight. He kind of wanted to shoot but I thought the shot angle was a bit to extreme. I love sitting with them and coaching them along. If I would have had someone sitting w/ me when I started hunting it would have really shortened the learning curve. I'm glad to see so many fathers taking up the cause.

CCH, Great job on a great hunt!! I just got back from my Elk hunt with my father-in-law and two younger brother-in-laws. CCH
10-20-2009, 08:55 PM
That blue thing is one of my better investments this year. It's a Katadyn Base Camp gravity filter. Of course I forgot a scoop to fill it and then Chase lost the bottle we planned to use in its stead so we had to dunk the bag to fill it in a rather shallow pond but it was OH so much easier than pumping. We just filled it up each night and let it fill our water bottles and a large Platypus water I kept in reserve. I should have mentioned it in the gear report but it slipped my mind what with the porcupine and all.

Good on you CCH. I estimate that I spend an hour of prep time at home for every hour that I spend in the field when my family is involved. This hunt was a big time investment! There will come a day when Chase understands how much time you put in and that will mean a lot to him regardless of whether he ultimately gets into hunting.

Hopefully that day will come before or at least not long after the day that he looks at a fox and understands what "that is why you knock" means.

Excellent, honest and heartfelt write-up. I thoroughly enjoyed it. With 4 kids and 4 grandkids, I can also relate. Many teenagers are pretty much scatterbrained when it comes to keeping their stuff together, losing stuff and not being able to find it. It seems, at times, as though they don’t care. But I think it’s more a matter of yet learning to be independent and responsible. That takes time. Patience and example are required.

It also seems to me that the two preeminent things that parents can provide their kids are example and opportunity. This father/son trip provided both. Way to go!

Two other idea that have worked well with my kids.

1. Go with their notion of what the hunt should be. My kids are all into electronics. They love two-way radios, GPS units, fancy flashlights and anything else with batteries that can be utilized during the hunt. Embrace and encourage all of that even if it may not square perfectly with your own view of the mountain.

2. Find ways to let them shoot. Carrying a firearms for days and not shooting it can leave kids amazingly discouraged. Especially when my kids were young, I manufactured ways for them to shoot at least once every day. Shoot at a distant rock. Pick off a pinecone. I often carried a paper plate in my pack and stuck that up for a target. Or I carried a .22 pistol for midday plinking sessions. I used to think that such shooting probably hurt the hunting, but I’m not so sure of that anymore. I do know it helped my kids a huge amount, and that was more important. Let them shoot.

Question - Which stove is that in the photo?

CCH
10-21-2009, 05:02 PM
Timberline, sorry but I wasn't going to pack in a .22 for additional shooting. The tent and stove alone went 12 lbs. and I was packing a lot compared to my normal trips to make this a comfortable hunt for him. Another couple of pounds was just not what I was looking for once I weighed everything and thought about packing an elk or two out to boot.

You're dead on with the gadgets. I posted earlier about a GPS for him as he has expressed interest, especially in one with mapping capabilities and is putting it on his Christmas list. He's interested in a rangefinder as well after getting to play with Westy's while out hunting. Unfortunately my GPS isn't ***y enough for him although it was ESSENTIAL on this trip and I don't have a rangefinder myself. He may be buying one of the latter with his own money. I'm keeping my eyes peeled on various classified forums.

Jack, it's a medium stove.

Might I then suggest one or two extra practice rounds per day for his rifle.

I learned this idea the hard way with my youngest son, who after several early years of hunting finally admitted to me that he was growing less interested in hunting because it seemed to him that all he ever did was carry the rifle and not shoot it. A few extra practice rounds per day totally changed his viewpoint.

Just something to think about...

You make a good point... for me to get a Pac-lite barrel for my Buckmark. :D

Lest you think I drove the kid hard all day, know that dad packed a stove to make mid-morning cocoa (and some Via for dad) to go with chocolate covered granola bars. We also repaired to the tent mid-afternoon to relax for a few hours, his version of which is reading -- he's a voracious reader. That was then followed by camp chores (see pictures of breaking wood) as there had to be some character building involved. It was not a dawn til dusk operation by any means.

Oh just saw the neighbors cat walk by back in a bit........

If cats were targets of opportunity, we'd drop the cocoa in a New York minute. Speaking of which, I figure that if I only order beverages with no more than two syllables at COFFEE shops, I'm setting a good example. No mocha, caramel macchiado, whipped whatevers with a feather plume stirring stick and rhinestone mug. Plus it's good fun to watch the servers puzzle it out when you order just a coffee refill for your own mug without mentioning any contradictory sizing (grande is friggin' large, not small). Whazzat? Room for cream? Nope, I'm pretty sure I said COFFEE. But per usual, I digress...

Maybe next time we'll work some shooting in. I thought I was doing pretty good with the big heated tent, books, cocoa and lots of snacks but I agree that some trigger time could have livened things up a bit.

You might also consider an air gun. They are reasonably quiet, cheap on ammo and loads of good fun and practice. My dad took me when very young and I carried my own pellet gun then graduated to the bigger stuff and got serious. A session around camp with an air gun in the pm can drive away the boredom for both of you.

That's a good idea but I still sort of like "having" to get a pac-lite set up for my Buckmark. :) Actually I could just bring my Model 60 with some light loads although plinking ammo is a lot heavier. Needless to say, I'm convinced. Next time out, we will have something to shoot. Haven't had a chance to reload for his .243 yet so we probably won't be shooting much of his meager and expensive supply of that. I'm pretty sure he'll be going on a totally different type of hunt this December and lugging my Buckmark as is won't be noticeable as it would have been on the last trip.

Excellent question. It was due Tuesday I think, but is still in progress. He doesn't have quite the word flow that his dad does. They go in by the thousands from all of his reading but seem to stay there when the writing comes into play.

How'd you know he's a CCH junior? However, only the initials are the same. I didn't pull a George Foreman but both boys have the same initials. Figured it would come in handy if someone got silly and gave me anything engraved. So far I have a knife from my wedding (thought they made good gifts for the groomsmen/ushers and the groom had to have one) and a flask from my sister's wedding. That's probably going to be it. Although I'll probably be dead, it will be telling to see if they fight over the flask or the knife. :D

After just returning from our deer hunt on Tuesday, I can relate only TOO WELL with some of your frustrations with how much work it is for us dads when we take the young'ens out to hunt. In the end, it is all worth it, but I really think they have no idea whatsoever, how much work it is to plan, organize, sort, pack and overall prepare for a trip like that. This year not only were my 12 yr old and 10 yr old sons hunting, but I decided my 8 yr old son was now old enough to join us at 'deer camp' for the fun and experience.

One kid with one rifle would be a joy compared to 4 sets (1 for me and 3 for the boys) of rifles, shotguns (grouse and waterfowl were in the area), bows, flyrods, hunting gear, regular clothes, camp gear, food, etc. Oh my gawd.

The real frustrating part is once you get it all to camp, you have 3 boys asking constantly where this is and where that is and then after returning to camp from hunting, they seem to just drop crap whereever they happen to be, which ends up being spread out all over camp, the truck, around the campfire, in the trailer, etc. When it's time to head back out hunting, it takes a good 30 minutes for everyone to find all of their stuff again. My hunting of course takes a backseat to getting them on grouse, squirrels, fish, deer and looking for bear and coyotes. I could go on and on.

Plainly stated, it is a TON of work. As I said, the memories taken from the effort are truly worth it all, but at the time, it's easy to find yourself questioning the craziness.

Sounds like an overall good experience for you and Chase. It's good to know there are others out there that can share in the experience of helping our kids get out there in the outdoors to hunt and fish.

Delighted to see Chase putting the pack to good use. Randy beat me to the Universal Gunbearer recommendation. If you look closely at the right side of the hipbelt you'll see a lightly frayed place where the hook-side velcro wore the fabric a bit when I used a Universal on that pack. Worked great.

After my dad picked me up from school we went straight to where we were going to go hunting. We hiked for over an hour on steep, rugged, and uphill terrain. Then after we were done with that part of the hike we went off the trail and hiked some more. We had a lot heavier packs then normal so the was hard; and on top of that we had to carry our rifles. Of course my dad was prepared and had something that attached to his pack and carried his rifle but for me (I had never carried a rifle that long before) it was getting me off balance and making that hike a lot harder then it would be without a rifle.
Eventually we reached camp and while my dad pitched the tent I gathered, broke, and cut fire wood for our stove. That day we did not do any hunting but gathered the stuff we would be hunting with tomorrow. Then we had instant mashed potatoes for dinner and went to bed. That night was pretty comfortable since the ground was really soft. My dad thinks the clearing we slept in used to be a pond that dried up years ago. It was uphill of our water source which was a half-frozen pond.
The beginning of our next day was not a happy one. We had over-slept and then a mile away I realized I did not mittens (they were in my pack and I found them the next day). Later that morning we had coffee and hot-coco on a sunny patch of rocks. Then we got in to some deeper brush and thatís where we found some fresh tracks. At first we thought there was only one but as we were moving on we realized there were two. We followed them for over an hour with my dad calling every ten or so minutes. Then an elk responded. We could not see the elk because of a ridge. Slowly we crossed the ridge and found another ridge blocking the way. My dad guessed they must be about twenty-five yards away. We waited about ten minutes without hearing them then we snuck over the ridge only to find that the elk had snuck off. We followed the tracks but the terrain got extremely tough and we had to turn back. Partly because of the steepness and partly because of having to carry out elk meat for several trips. After stalking around till no shooting was allowed we went back to camp with no elk. After calling in that elk the only thing exiting was my dad being outrun by a porcupine and then he could not find it.
The next day we woke up and got hunting. But after about an hour I was not felling good. Then we went back to camp and packed up. After getting ready we started the trip down the trip was uneventful except for hearing some shots. We reached the car passing some men with a doe. We changed to normal clothes and then we left.
I had a great time on this trip to the mountains. It was my first big-game hunting trip and I really enjoyed it. Even though we did not get anything I gained some great memories here. Lucky for me youth tags can hunt anywhere with a late season in December; so even though I did not get anything this trip I get another great chance."

I've already told him how proud I am that he made it on a hunt this tough. He done good. ;)

Dad went back up Saturday for a few hours. Similar scenario following fresh elk tracks although it was a bit more rugged and there were no cocoa stops. Spooked them off their beds in very heavy cover and never saw them. Did see a porcupine again about 100 yards up the trail from the parking lot. It was the biggest one I've ever seen. I was able to get within a few feet of this one so apparently all is not lost in my stalking skills. :D Three blue grouse, one of which gave me an adrenalin shot that I did not need and may have helped spooked the elk, were the remainder of game sighted. Crunch snow again made for challenging stalking. Chase will go out in December. Considering up by Craig based on some recommendations. Will be a very different hunt but perhaps we'll put some meat in the larder still.

Of course my dad was prepared

Gotta love that one. That's just got to make your chest puff out a bit.

After calling in that elk the only thing exciting was my dad being outrun by a porcupine and then he could not find it.

CCH, Are you fully prepared for when the seeds of sarcasm begin to one day take root and begin to flourish?

Appears as if we have a young Timberline in the making, good work Chase, your dad is a pretty cool guy, anytime you want to shoot the ultimate shotgun, let me know, I picked it up from him a few weeks ago and you were just awakened from a nap. Tell your dad you want to go pheasant hunting and you are welcome on any trip we take, which is quite a few. Make sure he sends you with one dinner for 3-4 guys and enough gas money once we get back.
Have a great evening and study your math, makes life easier when you get older and balder.

Bushcraft, yeah, it makes me feel good but he doesn't have much to compare to as far as coming prepared. He failed to note that although the porcupine appeared to outrun me, I outran him. ;)

Jon, I'll send him out with some MREs. I know where to get a good deal on some. You're taking the Prius, right?

Thanks goodness I didn't have to write up my first hunts I would not have done that well. Hope we get more reports and one says "my Dad found me an elk". Good luck.

Hope we get more reports and one says "my Dad found me an elk". Good luck.

Considering the dad in question, I wouldn't count on it. I'm starting to be hell on porcupines though.

CCH,
Well done. Very well done. I still remember being hurtled and cold next to my Dad while duck hunting when I was that age. At that stage I too was fascinated by all the new things about hunting. Things like my Dads' humpback A5, camo, decoy sets, blind location, and hot tea in the thermos. Those thoughts grew into begging for new hunting gear (still remember my first ASAT camo coat), learning how to turkey call (my Mom hated that), my Dad teaching me about farming while putting in food plots, reloading, ballistics, scouting, and finally watching/learning by example as my Dad spent 11hrs a day straight on stand.
I am in AK now and hope to try to repay my Dad for all the things he taught me. We are currently planning a self guided Moose hunt for this time next year. And it all started out in that snow swept duck blind on Fletchers Floodwaters back in Michigan.
Keep on doing what you are doing CCH, you are doing great.

Chase,
Very well done on the write up. Also, very well done carrying all that weight.
Keep up the good work!!

Regards,
John
