View Full Version : Malice Slot Pocket Idea

Thinking about the utility of the slot pockets on the Zulu/ZXR. What if one could attach a slot pocket(s) to any pack? Maybe different sizes too. It could run under the compression straps to keep items secure. A velcro closure on top also. Pals on outside would be optional or none at all. Malice attachment for security.

I like that idea...I'm almost never without my flyrod and trekking poles, so having some sort of scabbard to keep them secure to the pack would be great. (I've been thinking of replacing my Siwash with the ZXR for just that reason.)

I know Eberlestock make scabbards for rifles and shotguns which attach to PALS webbing via MALICE clips, which is a similar, if more bulky idea. I won't link to them to save stepping on Kifaru's shoes, maybe (although they are fundamentally different to the GunBearer system), but OPTG carry them.

I also seem to remember HSGI making a more cut-down version, which I also saw on OPTG, but I can't find it any more. Then again I may be remembering things that never existed...

I've considered using some of the very basic hydration carriers on the sides of my EMR for just that purpose: My fly rod and my trekking poles. Kind of the same idea, although Kifaru slot pockets would be better...

I've been tinkering with some of these ever since I got my G1 MOLLE Express. Haven't come up with any really good designs yet but I will.

Would totally get at least one maybe two for my packs. Maybe if it attaches with slick clips and/or 1in common loops to run compression straps through? **** if I wasn't in Kuwait I'd try and sew something up.

Pretty neat, but I had something smaller, simpler in mind. For use with trekking poles, fly rods, tent poles, etc.

How about the Tactical Tailor three-liter modular hydration carrier (http://www.tacticaltailor.com/modhydrationcarrier.aspx)?

When I think slot pockets I think just a folded piece of fabric that doesn't even have a cover flap. Will be perfect for machetes, fishing rods... and if we make the slot pocket a through-and-through, then even for carrying skis...

I can see it already, the craziness of layering long pockets outside the slot pockets which are then mounted onto the pack itself... where do I sign up? :D

Hey Steveb, looks like problem solved to me, with that TT rig. Everything you are looking for, with total modularity.

Here is one of the better PALS interpretations of the slot pocket.

SKD Tac frequently has them in other colors. They are pricey.

And yes, I HAVE used them with a ZXR because it's so much easier to get hydration bladders in and out of "attached" slot pockets...

What I want is the E&E centered on the pack with slot pockets on each side. On the MOLLEx this means a simple envelope, open at the top occupying 6 rows, 3 column PALS with the same PALS count on the front.

Yeah, I think that one of those hydration carriers will work for my needs.

A simple pocket with PALS on the outside would be an easy project from any of the custom gear makers though.

Cost effective? Well that's a different story...
