View Full Version : Thread deletion by the thread starter

I've noticed that the starter of a thread is able to delete the whole thread if he/she does not like the direction it heads. My suggestion would be that only moderators should be able to delete whole threads.

Flatbow,

I agree! One or Two comes to mind in the last few weeks.

Well, I promise not to delete this thread. ;) The reason I bring this up is primarily related to trading post advertisements and transactions. If someone advertises an item, he should not be able to pull what he had posted - especially after a transaction agreement has been reached. It should remain as a public record. That way if there is a problem with a transaction (such as non-delivery, or delivery of an item different than as described), he/she simply cannot yank the thread and erase that record.

I concur. Last week an individual received an item in conditions other than stated. He posted a pic of it, and 10 minutes later the seller deleted the thread. Awesome.

The remedy for that is for the purchaser to start a new thread.

I disagree here. This offers those who make an error to correct their error, and several who post here have done so. The majority of the board is self-regulating, and to inhibit that would be counterproductive.

It's all well and good to start a new post with any complaints, but there's no proof as to what terms were laid out by the OP. Any data in the initial ad (regarding cost, quantity, condition, characteristics, etc.) is lost. If I respond with a quote to the add, it's in there for good, regardless of how the OP edits his initial post.

+1. I think I deleted a thread in the not too distant past and am glad I had the ability to do so.

If the starter of a thread wants his/her post deleted they should apply to the moderator and it should be the moderators discretion as to whether or not it gets deleted. Especially when financical transactions are involved.

Nonsense. People can pull their ads when they please, and take their wares off the market if they choose. Or change the terms of sale. Nobody has a right to anything until the offer is accepted.

OK. Once the offer is accepted, what right does someone have? Do the moderators have the ability to recover a thread that a seller had deleted if there is a dispute between the seller and buyer so that there is a record available of what was advertised and agreed to?

No, we don't. Gone is gone.

You'll have to protect yourself the best way you know how, which may be by emails sent and received at that point.

Then don't allow them to delete on trading post items, they can mark them sold!
