NY Times article summarizing research report in Nature.

Article on how they have shown that Chronic Wasting Disease is spread in deer and elk via an oral-fecal route. Evidently the prions (mis-folded proteins that can impart their mis-folding on other prions) are released in the intestines before the animal shows sickness and worst bind to clay and dirt and linger in the environment forever(?). Bad news, would seem to suggest that CWD is here to stay, will likely only spread further. Luckily no evidence that it causes any disease in people. As a neuroscientist, it is incredibly interesting. As a hunter, this s--ks!

Outside the laboratory, nothing can inactivate prions bound to soil. They are also impervious to radiation.

Jeez. Did these things come from outer space or what?
