Morning folks---I have a question. Has anyone recently used Winchester Silvertips on game---mule deer sized. I "inherited" a bunch of factory ammo for the .270 Win, 130 gr. persuasion; it is probably 5-6 years old, but stored in . I not sure if it would be best to relegate it to plinking status or use it for making venison. Dim memories from the 60's recall some acquaintances who were not happy with that bullet's performance, but I can't recall the details. I am hoping someone out there has some real world experience to help me out.
Thanks,
Bruce

I killed my first deer with Silvertips in an old 30-30. They will do fine for deer (and probably, with proper shot placement, most other animals a 270 will take ).

Yolla,
Are these the Western Silvertips? If so, they are a terrible round and I'd sell them (to me preferably) as they are hard to find. I've seen a fine mule deer and at least on bull Elk taken with them. Like I said, if you don't want them, I'd love to take them off of your hands.

I know of at least one whitetail buck taken many years ago with .270 130 grain Winchester Silvertip by my dad. Seemed to work fine.

I believe a "Winchester Silvertip" is a Made by Nosler and is just the same as a Ballistic tip.

I've used the Silvertip's out of a .30-30 on coyotes with great success. Little soft. But they'll do just fine for deer if you place it where you ought to.

I guess it depends which one they are talking about! Bush, a 30-30, really? I think I had one of those with my .22LR when I was a kid! Good for a 100yds on a good day! To each his own!

Yes, I suppose it would depend on what he was talking about. As it is, he was talking about Silvertips, not Ballistic Silvertips.

As for the other comment...What can I say, some people are under the mistaken belief that they need a .300 Weatherby Magdumb to harvest a doe.

These are the "old" Silvertips- Product " X2703 as pictured by Bushcraft. I am sure they will take a deer---but then I took a bunch of blacktails and an antelope with Cor-lokts in the same caliber, but was disappointed with them when I hit the humerus of a small muley buck (harvested the deer, but it wasn't a clean kill by any means). Otoject---if you are serious about wanting them, send me a PM. I am not sure how to ship ammo---I don't have a FFL.
