This topic has been cussed and discussed and I'm sure there will be second guessing in this case but lightning in the mountains is just scary.

If you seek shelter under a tree it is probably better if that isn't the highest spot around.

I forget where I recently read it, but some "expert" was saying that taking shelter under trees is one of the worse things to do. When animals are found killed by lightning, they're very often found under trees.

My personal rules have been;
#1. to get off high points (land or roofs)
#2. stay off the ridges
#3. don't stand next to or under tall things.
#4. if local strikes are imminent and no good shelter is available; grab anything that can insulate my feet from the ground (trash, sticks/brush, sleeping pad, dry clothes or as last result - backpack) and squat down low on top of that insulation with only your feet touching. I laughing like to refer to this as being the best position to either "finally kiss your 'rear' goodbye or get the 'stuffing' blown out of you." ;)

Here's a site that offers much more intelligent suggestions and information.
