My 11 year old Golden Retriever--better known as a "Chucklehead" in her earlier days. Too bad she has the leash on in the snow pic but, being a bird dog, she of course would rather chase fox and rabbit

Hiking with one's dog is just fun. Mine likes the snow but is not big on picking blueberrries in the middle of a warm summer day.

I know someone whose dog eats the blueberries they are trying to raise before they can get them picked. :)

Here's a GSD that we added to the family (or did he pick us) earlier this year. He loves to be outside, in any weather, and is a great hiking companion! Once he fills out a little more I think he'll be carrying his own pack, though...

Maybe Kifaru can create a dog pack line. How about it? :)

Now when we take a walk in the bush, he does look like he was made to be in there.

Boltgun,

Thanks for posting the pictures of buddy. My chocolate lab female (Mousse) used to do that same exact pose. She's been gone for a couple of years now, it's good to see another happy lab on the couch. Give him a pat on the head for me.:)

He was sitting beside me as I opened the thread. I did just that.

Here's Abby and me with a couple of roosters. She turned 5 last week. She's a 70# bird gettin machine, especially if water is involved. Oh she does the couch and bed thing too, but when the vest and scattergun come out she is all business.

Elmo,
Sorry about the loss of Elmo, your Bernese. They seem to be such cool dogs. My brother has one and she thinks she is a lap dog. To paraphrase Led Zeppelin, she is a "whole lotta love."

RD,
I would have preferred to not use a bell on Misha, but people who live and hunt in the upper Midwest whose opinions I respect had recommended it. There have been increased dog-wolf encounters, which always end badly for the dog, and the opinion is that a bell helps to reduce the chance of an encounter by communicating to the wolves that this dog has a man with him. My thought was that the bell might make the grouse flush hard rather than tree. This did not seem to be the case though. Misha treed grouse as well as the setter pointed them. Thanks for the comments.

Great dogs. Quite the variety. As far as the bell. I like it. I always used a bell on my setter and when the dumb dog went after a pheasant , ignoring my command by the way, the bell would help me locate her in the tall grass and woods. Still use one for my boxer depending on where I go.

Good points Bonasus. I will have to set up our WSL with a similar dinger. I haven't been able to trust him off leash yet, he's still a teeny bopper, but the bell and more treats is good start!

By the way, I think our pooch is a distant cousin/half brother to Misha, he's out of Nayda and Griz.

Reminds me of a favorite story,

My 2 nieces decided I would take them to dinner, They come to my house; sat on the ends of the sofa and pushed for a good restaurant.

Elmo made a full speed run at the sofa and landed between them!

A few seconds later one said, " I'm not hungry, maybe another day" and they left.

I sent out for a $10 hamburger for Elmo. :)

Bonasus,

How long did the grouse stay treed?

Bonasus
11-09-2009, 05:32 PM
Not long. I heard it flush. He was only barking for less than 30 seconds I would guess. The young-of-the-year birds, I think, are more likely to tree. The older birds are more likely to leave for the next county.

Here is a picture of Kobee (the Black Mouth Cur) and our newest addition Quinn (Border Collie). One of the rare moments that they aren't trying to chew each others ears off.
