View Full Version : Colorado Winter Rondy 2009

Sawtooth

Well, there's one in the NE and one in the PNW. My pal, singleshot (the instigator of all of this), got a hold of me this week and we've spent some time knocking around the idea of a Colorado Winter Rondy. So, here are the details!

The Rondy will be on the weekend of 14-15 February, at a remote location near the Dillon-Silverthorne area in Summit County. The trailhead is accessible by 4WD. The campsite is reached by an easy snowshoe or ski trek. If you plan to attend, please bring your own camp gear and food. Several pairs of extra snowshoes will be available if you don't have your own. Be ready for some great camaraderie, tall snow, and beautiful surroundings.

I'll PM driving directions to the trailhead out to you prior to the weekend of the Rondy.

Hope to see you there!

So, who's interested?

Great idea Saw, but you picked a lousy weekend - headed home to see the fam that weekend.

If you don't mind, PM me the directions just in case my travel plans fall through.

Smoke, I can bring you an 8 man and large stove, I think I am in, will check with the wife and two dogs and reconfirm, we can use the 4 man I have.
If smoke needs an 8 man at least 50 yds away from everyone else, he should have no excuse not to be there.

CCH,

See, I told you! It would only lead to trouble if we lived closer to each other. Tell your Mrs. that there's a silver lining...you and I only get out together a couple of times a year. It could be much worse! :D

I'd be game, but I'm 99% sure I have to work that weekend.

Well, I think this is a super idea Sawtooth and Singleshot! When I enthusiastically told my Sarah about it she presented a long face, affixing doleful baby blues on me, and declared I'd been absent to the field the last four Valentine Day's. (Our womenfolk apparently keep track of such things.) My girl makes very few demands on me when it comes to field time, but she is my bride of these 45 years--thru thick and thin. Etc. Put me down for maybe...and that late Saturday. We'll see....

CCH

I'm still working on getting to 45 years, hence I'll have to pass. :D

Sawtooth, we could probably get together more but if you could avoid anniversaries, birthdays and Valentine's Day that would help. Could get away with the Hallmark created Sweetest Day though.

What a hoot. I'm previously comitted for the month, but hope you get a good turnout. This could become something big. Good luck.

Finding a weekend that works for everyone is just about impossible. You just kind of have to throw a dart at the calendar and go with it.

Sounds like great idea, but the Missus has me locked in for dinner out on Valentine's day. Plus her idea of camping is no room service! Maybe next year.

02-02-2009, 06:43 PM
I told my wife I wanted to spend Valentines day with her for the first time in 30 years so that I wouldn't have to go camping in the snow with Jon and Sawtooth.
She said "Get out of here, Go have fun with your friends."
"You can take me to the Outback Steak House this week."
Good Wife.

Sounds fun, wish I could come. But between Valentine's day and Sunday obligations I'll have to pass. Which truly bums me out as I think I'm booked for a canoe trip in MT during the May Colorado Rondy as well. You all have fun!

You can't miss the May Rondy. We'll starve.

Sawtooth, I coach baseball in the spring (although it's really still winter here) and girls softball in the fall.

Jon S
02-05-2009, 09:24 PM
I coach the girls tennis team starting 2/17, otoejet, you can make it too.
Cleve, you can't miss both, somebody has to make the breakfast burritos that I have grown to love.
I am in with the wife (does that sound dirty?) not sure if I am headed up Fri nite or Sat Morn,
Saw, please PM me directions to the trailhead, think I know where it is based on Singleshot's and my phone call the other night, but directions wouldn't hurt.
SS, I will give a call and see about Friday night lodging with you if we head up, we probably will based on my hatred for traffic...
Anybody got a sled they need me to carry all our stuff and some beer for you in?
Hope to see more than 4 of us up there, but we will have fun nonetheless...

We may ski in on Sunday morning, not sure yet though. Who's cooking breakfast?

Sawtooth
02-06-2009, 07:05 AM
Jon,

I only have my one pulk, but I think singleshot has an extra. Using pulks will allow us some good vittles and barley pop. I think singleshot might try to ice fish a nearby big lake on Friday. If so, I'll cook up some trout. Will you and your mate be using skis or snowshoes? singleshot and I will be skiing.

Smoke, I hope you and the Mrs. can make it up.

Driving directions will be PM'd soon. I'm still hoping we can pick up some more attendees at the last minute.

Sawtooth,

Put me on your PM list. I can't say for sure but since you'll be so close.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned the DAYTONA 500!!!

How far off the road and what kind of incline?

Chris

Sawtooth

HOLY COW, CHRIS! I haven't seen or heard from you for what seems to be a LONG time. Hope all is well! I'll be in touch!!!

Cleve,
You can't miss the May Rondy. We'll starve.

Well, I seem to remember others who brought some pretty fine vittles too (I seem to remember you smoking some fine meaty things that Herb sent for instance). So I don't quite believe y'all'd actually starve in my absence.

But I've had a plan to canoe the "Wild and Scenic" section of the Missouri on the books for nearly a year now and it's looking like thats when we'd need to head north. But there are some other wrinkles (like my wife being out of a job at the end of this month) that may make a cheaper, closer to home option more doable. We'll see.

Sawtooth
02-06-2009, 05:04 PM
Cleve, we'll miss you if you head to the river! But it'll be good knowing you're getting your paddle wet. I'll be thinking about you while I'm out turkey hunting this spring.

CCH
02-07-2009, 08:20 AM
Is there anyone headed up from the southwest Denver area (Littleton/Roxborough) that could deliver a large package to Sawtooth since I can't make it?

Cleve
02-07-2009, 12:59 PM
Yeah, Sawtooth I'll miss seeing you all too if that's how it pans out.

Turkey season is approaching -- deadline for limited apps in 5 days. I think I'll just be applying for a pref point and hunting unlimited areas here in the Front Range. My boss saw a flock of about thirty birds when he was up fishing last week -- of course they'll have dispersed by the time the spring breeding season (and hunting season) arrives. But it's nice to have a bunch located, as much as Merriams move around. Still involve some boot leather to find them again in April or May. Good luck to you when the time comes.

Went out yesterday on the skis with a sled to pin down the campsite. Skied about 4 miles..

[IMG]http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/singleshot1/013.jpg

Lucky for us, the best campsite is only 18 minutes from the truck.

[img][IMG]http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/singleshot1/023-1.jpg

Found this place yesterday, but after ice fishing in the morning and skiing in the afternoon I was too tired to cut firewood.
I went back this morning and cut some wood for the stoves and to sit on.

[img][IMG]http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/singleshot1/016.jpg

Packed down an area to set up a 12 man next Sat.

[img][IMG]http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb33/singleshot1/022-3.jpg[img/]

Spring conditions up there today. Temp. was 38.
You don't need skis. Today I walked in and put the snowshoes on for the last 200 yards and to cut wood.
Sawtooth wants to stay until Monday, which is a holiday, so come on up after you get Valentines day squared away.

CCH
02-08-2009, 06:41 PM
Hmmm.... I might not have fieldwork on Monday. That might work after all! Going in Sunday gives things a whole new complexion.

Singleshot, I don't care what Sawtooth says, you're all right in my book. That is some serious work you're putting in there! Thanks, whether I go up or not!

Jon S
02-08-2009, 07:10 PM
Thanks Singleshot,
Just wondering how far away you packed down the spot for my 8 man :)
Looking forward to next weekend, should be fun
Saw and Singleshot, I sent you both a PM

Sawtooth
02-08-2009, 07:13 PM
It's supposed to snow off and on all week, so we might have some fresh. That wood looks great! Looks like a splitting maul needs to be hauled in. Hope you can make it, CCH!

singleshot's GTG in my book, too! I saw him do some things last summer that are usually reserved for men half his age.

singleshot
02-08-2009, 07:21 PM
Jon, That first picture is about a mile and a half up the road.
Is that far enough away for a Valentines day celebration?

CCH
02-08-2009, 07:46 PM
Are we talking high clearance 4x4 to get to the trailhead and if so, when does the shuttle service run? ;)

Jon, I'll PM you on whether Wednesday night is needed after I -- again -- get clearance from the boss. :D

Sawtooth
02-08-2009, 07:49 PM
CCH, if your buggy is too low-slung, I'll shuttle you up there in my rig. I should be up there by noon at the very latest.

Jon S
02-08-2009, 07:51 PM
1.5 miles should be able to drown out any celebration sounds, but I might prefer not walking so far from the 16 man.
I will bring dinner for the second night, not sure what it will be, we have been making some chicken tikka masala that does well over rice, that just might fit the bill.
Do we know how many folks will be in on Sunday night?
A number of attendees is in order so's no one goes hungry.
I hope we can add some of Saw's fish to that mix as well, here's to catchin' some
See you all next weekend...

It is 1.2 miles up a steep county dirt road. It does get plowed as does the parking lot.
It just seems like they plow it last and it is usually snow covered. Today I did not use 4 x 4.

Sawtooth
02-08-2009, 08:12 PM
OK, here's the dinner menus. Breakfast and lunch will be on your own.

Saturday dinner:

Sawtooth's chili con carne, tortillas, cheese. I'll bring some Jiffy Pop popcorn for an after-dinner treat. K. stoves come in real handy for that.

Sunday dinner:

Jon S's mystery meal

Hopeful appetizers are pan fried trout with Creole seasoning.

I think I'm going to sleep REAL well at night. :D

After re-reading this thread I see were I screwed up. It looks like it was a mile and a half up the trail? Some how I got the idea it was a few hundred yards. So I walked up maybe a half a mile.

Not too brite I guess...

Back from the hills with a crew of 4 tough souls (would have been 5 if we had been able to connect with Chris57, sorry we didn't Chris) and two four legged friends (Tyrone and Belle, my two dogs)

Minda and I headed up Friday night and spent the night at Singleshot's place in Silverthorne, got up early Sat a.m. and headed out to the reservoir for some ice fishing.
Singleshot caught 3, I caught none, call it beginners luck or the lack thereof, but it was a beautiful morning, no wind, clear skies, all around gorgeous.

Met up with Sawtooth and Minda around noon at the turnoff and headed into the hills.
Used a 12 man for Saw and SS to sleep in and as all around hangout, and an 8 man a few yards away for me and the crew.

4 tough souls: Sawtooth, Singleshot, Minda (my wife) and I headed into the snow on a well packed trail, branched off, broke a small amount of trail and arrived at shangri-la (I would insert picture here if I had brought a camera)

Weather could not have been much better, sunny each day, perfect for napping, skiing, and enjoying the weather.

Thanks to SS for the thermometer to tell you all it was -6 on Sat night and -4 last night outside, but the small arctic stove was a hit. Singleshot cut down a tree last week which kept both tipis cozy and snuggly for a perfect Valentines Day.

We had a good time, good conversations, gear talk and good grub. If you have not had Sawtooth's chili, he says it is posted on the recipe forum, I would highly recommend it and will use it in the near future.
Singleshot went out again yesterday morning to fish with someone else who hiked in (Kevin M, I think, he came in while the occupants of the 8 man were still asleep) and caught 3 more, breakfast this morning was fresh trout and some elk stirfry, darn good, mmmm..mmmm...good.
Too bad we didn't have more in attendance to brave the VD weekend, hopefully more will come to the next one, it is great to see the ECR and PCR have so many in attendance and sad that we can only muster 4 hearty souls!!!

Looking forward to heading back there as it was a beautiful spot that needs to be further explored by me and my crew.

Fine report, Jon.

The upper respiratory infection that has plagued staff here at the Shop finally caught up with me, complicated by conjuctivitis (pink eye), which is VERY contagious. So. I spared you hearty souls catching my maladies and didn't show. Missed out on yummy eats, skiing and the comaraderie! Dang it. I had skis, sled, elk fixin's all ready to go, then got backsided by this stuff. Well, next time, amigos. Next time.

Great report, Jon! I can't add much more to your narrative, so I'll just post some pics. I think singleshot has some photos as well, and hopefully he'll post them. Wonderful weather (snow, cold, sun), super camaraderie. The rest of you missed a good time this weekend!

Anyone pack a firearm in there to keep the sabertooth hares at bay?

Yes, I did. I took my S&W Model 60 full of my mouse loads. And spares in case Mr. Longears had lots of company. On Sunday morning I left camp on skis, broke a trail into the draw behind, and followed it until it ran out into slopes too steep for me to herringbone my way up. I found lots of good snowshoe hare sign, but no bunnies. I found this strange, because the previous night had been very cold (-6) and snowy (3 inches), and the following morning gave us sunshine. Perfect for finding bunnies warming themselves. They had been out after the snow, but didn't stay out long. So, we had to resort to eating lake trout and elk meat. :D

Timberline

Let's see...stringy rabbit ooooooooooooooor trout and elk?

Well gosh. Please pass the Mountain Surf and Turf!

Still, I love hunting those bunnies. Kinda figured you'd be packing your nifty M60.
