View Full Version : NW Rondee Idea

03-09-2008, 08:32 AM
This is to gauge interest in a shooting focused rondee. Bushcraft and I were doing some shooting yesterday and it was a hoot to get the oppurtunity to shoot some of his different stuff, and we both agreed that a shooting focused rondee might be fun. Evan and I are memebers of a range with excellent facilities and it allows camping. So this would still be a camping rondee we would just do some shooting as well. Or other locations could be used as well.

Anyway, How many people would be interested?

Very interested. I regretfully missed the winter rondy, but I'm definitely game for a shooting party.

03-10-2008, 10:07 AM
I'm in, but as you know if depends on timing.

03-10-2008, 11:25 AM
Karl what is your timing...pm me if you want.

03-10-2008, 12:19 PM
I like the idea and would be up for it depending on schedule. Right now, it seems like June would have the most potential for working for me. I'm a definate maybe.

Are we talking a shooting foray as an additional outing or in place of the pack in outing? Regardless, date(s) need to come to the fore considering the size of the group attending last year.

03-10-2008, 01:46 PM
We've got to maintain the genuine backcountry rondy aspect, so the shooting rondy would be additional. To my way of thinking, it would be nice to have a mix of fun and instruction for the powder burning rondy.

I also missed the winter rondy due to extreme snow and road closures. Darn shame as I really prepared for it, but I ended up mucking out my driveway and shoveling my roofs.

I'd like to participate in some summer rondy and get some instruction and the like.

BTW I just was with Shawn Carlock today and placed an order for a sporter weight EDGE and he got me a copy of a shooting video DVD he put together.

03-10-2008, 05:39 PM
I am thinking in addition to the summer and winter rondee.

03-10-2008, 08:17 PM
Great idea. I am going to be gone for two weeks at the end of May (14th-27th), but that's the biggest event for me in the coming months, other than finishing up school for my week long spring break at the end of March.

Count me in! Shooting and camping, great combo.

03-11-2008, 08:38 AM
okay so now that we have enough interest lets talk time and place.

I figure the fall is out and the summer should remain the provence of the backpacking rondee.

So I am thinking sometime this spring. Perhaps the end of April or beginning of February?

As to place, the range Evan and I are memebers of has a lot of excellent facilities to use and no matter what weekend we choose there will be some kind of practical pistol match if people are interested. Camping is allowed at the range, but we will run into hassles with regards to the locked gate and perhaps people coming by and wanting to chat. The range is located such that there is plenty of camping on BLM land close by but then we couldn't just stumble out of our tents and do some shooting like they do in CO ;). Also I am not sure that Bend is the most centrally located place. Does anyone have suggestions of other areas that might work?

So suggestions for Dates and Locations are solicated at this point.

03-11-2008, 10:20 AM
End of April would be good for me, most likely on a weekend. I have classes on Fridays this spring, so I could head out later in the day and be in Bend by evening on a Friday and then stay until Sunday afternoon/evening.

As for a location, the range that you talked about at the NWWR sounds pretty sweet. I could probably drive from the Portland area, if anyone's interested in carpooling.

03-11-2008, 12:40 PM
I'm interested depending on dates, work etc.

03-12-2008, 07:34 AM
Another location has been suggested. Snakey has 40 acres outside of Eugene. He has a 150yd range set up, but due to local foliage is only 1 or 2 shooters wide. He also has an area were 700yds can be fitted in. I think for a variety of reasons this might be a better location, but it is up to you guys. If we use Snakey's place available weekends if I understand correctly are the 1st, 2nd, or 4th weekend of April and the first weekend of May.

What dates work for you?
What location woudl you prefer?

03-12-2008, 07:58 AM
Sounds like Snakey's spot would work out well, possibly easier to camp on? Sounds like we would have the whole place to ourselves, as opposed to having a pistol match there too.

Looking at the calendar, I could make it down the 4-6th of April, and also the 25th-27th of April.

Either location sounds good to me.

03-15-2008, 07:32 AM
Does anyone have any date preferences or should we firm this up around what is already suggested?

03-17-2008, 05:32 AM
I'm ready to start nailing it down

03-17-2008, 07:41 AM
I am as well. At this point I think we are looking at the first weekend in April or the first weekend in May based on what I have heard from Folks. I think the first weekend in April might be a bit short notice. So I think we should do it the first weekend in May.

May 3-4 at Snakey's place. Any objections?

03-17-2008, 08:10 AM
I will be shooting a rifle match that weekend on the 3rd, so that would probably be out for me.

03-17-2008, 09:57 AM
I'm out the first 3 weekends in April, and have trips to CA or Sun River, OR in May. The first weekend in May is currently open for me, but will have to see if the finances with all this travel and time away from home is gonna work with the family before I can commit. If any date was gonna work for me, it would be the first weekend in May.

03-17-2008, 08:00 PM

I can't get the 4th off, but I have the following weekend off, the 10th and 11th.

I am new to the group so don't make any special arrangements for me. I would like to see the different size shelters and talk to a few of you who use them.

03-18-2008, 04:59 AM
Is the first weekend in April to short notice?

03-18-2008, 06:11 AM
First weekend in April is good to go, for me.

03-18-2008, 02:04 PM
April is a tough one. But that's alright as I've already been there at Snakey's this winter and he'll do just fine among you fellas. He did place 3 shots at about 1/2 moa at 406 yds with an rifle he never fired before.

His backyard clearcuts are wonderful for field shooting practice.

03-19-2008, 08:50 AM
I'm ready for it.

03-19-2008, 09:33 AM
So first weekend in April it is

April 5-6 at Snakey's All agreed?

03-19-2008, 09:35 AM
Sounds good to me!

03-19-2008, 12:01 PM
Who's coming, when and bringing what guns?

03-19-2008, 12:06 PM
I'll be there mid-morning (or whenever everyone else is showing up) on Saturday the 5th, bringing my Beretta 92, and my 10/22 (since that's all I have!)

03-19-2008, 12:11 PM
Once I have an idea of who all is coming I'll get out the directions via pms .

03-19-2008, 02:17 PM
I am coming. As to what to bring......Should I bring everything like old Super Badger or are there specific things folks are interested in shooting and not interested in shooting.

03-19-2008, 03:58 PM
I'd be interested in trying out that Socom II, I'll get some ammo together.

03-19-2008, 04:14 PM
it is actually a socom 16 not the 2 but same difference. I will put it on the list.

03-19-2008, 05:11 PM
I've an 1874 Sharps in 45-70 and a nice old marlin 30-30.

03-19-2008, 06:08 PM
I stand corrected, I remember you clearing that up at the NW rondy, couldn't remember which. Thanks! I'll have to see if I can scrape anything else together, MAYBE an M1 Garand.

03-19-2008, 06:18 PM
I would love to spend some time with your sharps. I can bring a trappers model 30/30, trappers model 45/70 both marlins, fal, ak, and blr if anyone is interested. I figure I will bring both .22 rifles since you can't have to many of those come shooting time.

So if any of those interest you speak up.

03-19-2008, 06:30 PM
Looks like I can probably make it. I don't have a lot to offer in the weapons department. SW MP, markIII hunter with paclite barel, rem mod7 .308, m77 target .243, tc renegade .50 and .54, and a remington model 12 .22.

03-19-2008, 08:42 PM
I would love to check out that paclite, and the model 70. Glad to hear you can make it! I'll have that Marauder there too.

03-20-2008, 08:21 AM
Does any one of you many computer whizzes know if I can send a pm to all concerned at once or do I need to pm everyone individually with directions?? Remember I am NOT very computer literate so if you attempt to instruct me keep it simple so I don't end up in the fetal position in the corner babbling.

03-20-2008, 09:47 AM
It is possible, but not necessarily user friendly and it is limited to 5. Maybe email Scot the directions and let him do the legwork /images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

03-20-2008, 10:15 AM

I wouldn't mind shooting the 45/70, if you plan on bringing it I'll pickup a box of ammo in 45/70. What does it like?

03-20-2008, 10:18 AM
I will bring the 45/70. There is nothing I have tried in it that it doesn't like. Right now it is sighted in for the leverevolution stuff but that is expensive and a bit hard on the shoulder. I would say just look for "cowboy" ammo in around 405grs not going to fast. With that it is pretty comfortable to shoot. In case you can't find anything I will bring a few boxes of shooting stuff.

03-20-2008, 08:37 PM
Well fellas I'll be taking 2 of my boys out for the youth turkey hunt that weekend, so I'm a no-go. Would love to join ya, but guess it'll have to wait 'til the regular NW Rondy in July. Can't and wouldn't miss a hunt with my boys, so have a great time and see ya in a few months anyway!

03-21-2008, 05:52 AM
I've got family coming into that weekend. In all the years my wife and I have lived away from family, we were always the ones that had to travel. Since our recent move we've had more visitors in 3 months than we had in 8 years in Oregon...go figure.

Anyway, if I could make it I would. Looks like lots of fun toys to try out...I'd love to add to the mix...375H&H, CZ in 223, 45LC who knows what else. Perhaps I'll pack in something interesting this summer. Have fun, see you all in few months!

03-21-2008, 07:46 AM
Someone should bring a shotgun cause I think Oregon turkey seasons starts and my flock of 20+ could use some thinning. 2Ravens are you coming to this or are we on for some later weekend? Later might be better for turkeys since I don't think they are to heated up yet.

03-21-2008, 07:59 AM
Sorry turkey season not until the 15th!

03-21-2008, 09:10 AM
Everybody that indicated interest originally and that hasn't said they couldn't come should have directions to Snakey's at this point. PM me if you want directions and didn't get them.

03-21-2008, 04:42 PM
Where's Buck?

Any idea on how many are showing up?

I'd like to make it and gain a little insight with you fellas. I also have a Sharps that I think some of you may like to shoot.

03-27-2008, 07:06 PM
Idaho lad,

I would love to shoot a sharps. I've wanted to shoot one since I first started shooting muzzle loaders back in the late 80's. If your bringing it what ammo does it like? I'll bring a box if I can find it, hate to shoot someone else's ammo all up.

As far as numbers I'm guessing you'll have to wait for Scothill to reply. The PM he sent out could possibly give you an estimate.

03-28-2008, 08:40 AM
At this point I think it is Snakey, me, SuperBadger, OR_Fire, Idaho Lad, and maybe Bushcraft.

Everyone else seems to have conflicts.

I would LOVE to shoot your sharps

03-28-2008, 09:31 AM
I may very well have a powder burning conflict of my own if I elect to go down to Snakey's after only having just moved to the new house the weekend prior. Therefore, it is with sadness in my heart that I must withdraw my "maybe" status. I will sorely miss not being able to visit with everyone and sample some of the Connoisseur’s amber delights.

Have fun fellas and be safe. Slap a steel plate or two for me!

03-30-2008, 06:15 AM
Dang Allen,
I was relying on you to bring the steel plates as it sounds like you have a nice collection. You know this isn't the he-man women hatters club, Girls are welcome too.

03-30-2008, 05:04 PM
I'm going to use my usual excuse, with photos.

Rebar stage several weeks ago:

Formed up, ready to pour soon:

Had my water line break, which set me back. Finally back on track.

03-31-2008, 07:32 AM
Sorry some of you can't make it but it is a good excuse to have another!! For those who are attending I had a good vacation with a successful steelhead trip attached and can provide a steelhead bbq for dinner if you want. Let me know if that works for everyone. When do people expect to arrive? Anyone coming in Fri.?

03-31-2008, 07:38 AM
Sounds delicious! I have school Friday, so I won't be able to make it over until probably mid-morning on Saturday. Thanks for inviting us to your place!

03-31-2008, 07:59 AM
I don't know my work schedule yet this week. So I can't say whether it will be friday or Saturday. I will let you know later this week if that is alright.

04-01-2008, 07:18 PM
Bummer, I don't think I'll be able to make it.

Don't scare off all the Turkeys.

04-02-2008, 08:17 AM
I will be their Saturday morning.

04-02-2008, 08:21 AM
Anybody planning on getting there sometime on Fri.?

04-02-2008, 08:22 AM
TwoRavens this being farm country animals don't scare easy. They will still be there when you can come.

04-04-2008, 07:56 AM
I will see everyone when they get here. I have dinner for Sat. pm covered.

04-04-2008, 12:21 PM
Unfortunately I have to cancel on you guys, its a long story. Scot can fill you in at the rondy.

04-04-2008, 07:45 PM

04-07-2008, 09:16 AM
Report? Pics?

Inquiring minds who didn't get to participate want to know!

04-07-2008, 09:50 AM
Bush just a quick one as others will have pictures and stories. Lots(!!!!!) of ammo expended. Stuff should worry if Scot Hill has a Sharps (45-70) with open sights at 700 yds!!!! The wild turkeys around my place are unfazed by any shooting including the muzzle blast from a 45-70 just over their heads at 50 yds and the gobblers will gobble at anything. Idaho Lad has some serious knowledge and lots of equipment with which to employ same. Super Badger can hit small stuff with a 22 offhand at 100 yds. All are great guys to be around. Loads of fun sorry you missed it but understandable.

ps I see a Sharps replica in Scot's near future there is a bond!!!

04-07-2008, 06:00 PM
If you want to kill a turkey Snakey's is the place to go. It took great will power to not help thme out with their obvious deathwish. Great location and a sweet DRY place to chill when the day is done. Other then that not a ton to add. A lot of shooting a lot of fun.

Oh and yeah I have been pricing them old fangled guns.

idaho lad
04-07-2008, 07:42 PM
You look good behind that old Sharps. We should do a few hundred rounds this summer at that cowboy range with the .40 and 45-70. I can even put the Verniers on for better sight picture.

04-08-2008, 05:40 AM
sounds good to me.

SuperBadger should have a bunch of pictures. He was the one with the camera. Oh and yeah he can make that little ruger shoot pretty dang good.

04-08-2008, 07:03 AM
Hey guys, I made another thread called "NW Shooting Rondy Report"

Should be right under this one. Thanks!
